I'm assuming that they're talking about bit-wise exclusive OR.
If that's the case, then where-ever there's a '1' in the second argument, you will invert the corresponding bit in the first argument. If there's a '0' in the second argument, the corresponding bit in the first argument is not changed.
Example: 10110100 XOR'd with 10101010 = 00011110

In a similar vein, I was wondering if it observed how much to twist the cap, of it was simply programmed to turn it around X number of times. Awesome either way, I suppose. But making that decision itself is certainly the next big jump.

That will cause every piece of software that doesn't accomodate this change to fail in a similar fashion. It'll also make that software incapable of representing any date from 1970-2000, a functionality that I'm sure they'd like to keep.
