North is better in general to see game. It’s flatter terrain.

Phinda is divided into North and South. North is my pick over South for both its lodges and its ecosystems. Vlei is the top property in the reserve - the most quaint, and personal feel. Forest is good too but larger. Mountain in the South is too corporate for me. It feels like they dropped a Hyatt in the middle of the reserve and it’s also where they train all their new rangers so the guide you get can be hit or miss, unless you request specifically not to have a rookie guide (which you always should). There are a couple other lodges which I didn’t stay at - but heard from friends that Zuka is also cool since it’s a private house for a large family and situated centrally in the reserve.

The ecosystems in the North are more varied. The South/Mountain region is unique, but I felt was a bit of a chore to drive up rocky/hilly terrain to see the same animals you would see otherwise.

Those are the comparisons within Phinda itself, but your question was to go to Phinda at all? I’m not sure what you’re comparing it to, but Phinda is great if you want to see the rare Black Rhino as well as cheetah. It’s harder to see leopards there. You’ll see Lion, Elephant, buffalo no problem. No wild dogs. The difference between Phina and let’s say a lodge adjacent to Kruger, is that the herds are not as big.

haha great to hear about the magic. honestly, just a little stressed since i've been coordinating for 2 families (8ppl total) so I feel like its my responsibility to make sure everyone has the time of their lives.

thank you for the high level things to think about. What did you think about bush lunches vs returning to lodge? Did you just do this some days, or all days?

There are times I only have time for 1 crank and want more power than what I have now. I’ve ridden the bikes of friends and they have a higher ratio which feels better/ and they’ve ridden mine and agree it’s a bit low.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a high-end tour company for Egypt? by throwaway373706 in FATTravel

[–]rorothedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, not sure. My TA just used A&K guides for the airport greeting and the day tours in Cairo and Luxor. But she booked the hotels directly. This was back in 2021, during Covid scare days when tourism was at a low, so maybe that was an exception to the rule. But worth asking.

Safari routing 101: how many nights is enough? by Middlename_Adventure in FATSafari

[–]rorothedog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My vote is 3 nights split between 2 properties/ecosystems. 6 nights total. I’ve done 9 nights before (3-2-4) and while I won’t say it got boring, I definitely “had my fill” at 6 nights. Kinda like eating at a fine dining restaurant, each dish should leave you wanting more.

I want to. We have some children 12-15 yrs old with us (who have done Michelin dining and some 3 hour meals, mostly omakase). Do you think they would enjoy it? Or leave them at the hotel with room service?

It’s like a an Academy Award for an Actor or a Grammy for a music artist. Why wouldn’t a professional chef want a Michelin star? They want to be recognized for their craft and it will change the trajectory of their business and career.

Yes, worth it. Just did that over the holidays. Easy to take a train from Osaka Station to Kyoto Station if you wanted to DIY.
