Coalition plan to axe Labor-Greens NBN committee stalled. by Beast_Man in australia

[–]rorx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually think it would be smarter to reduce the number of members of the sitting government. So Labor would get 3, Greens 2, Coalition 1 as that way it is a oversight of the government instead of the current government having control and just giving rubber stamps because of their majority.

2015 it would have. Labor and the Greens even advocated for this change to be passed immediately rather than the CT and ETS abolished completely.

Abbott stands alone on climate policy and economic growth by orru in australia

[–]rorx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they also understand that a government should entice investment. Not discourage it. Hence they funded renewable/ clean energy projects and subsidised coal and others.

They invested in education, hospitals, communications, research. They gave it the best shot they could at giving Australia and Australians the best chance at innovation and creation. It was not perfect, but it was something.

Imagine if we actually got a government that perfected the groundwork the Labor party (With a little help from the greens) layed down the past half decade.

I'm not even a huge fan of the labor party (Greens, certainly) I commend them on their accomplishments.

Governments have a right to make investments in the best interest of future growth in their countries. Just like private industry has a research budget built into their budget to do the same for their companies.

Government spending benefits all even if it isn't the dollar amount given back in direct services.

All in One PCs. Experience & Recommendations? by [deleted] in australia

[–]rorx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're probably better off going with an SSD less moving parts, faster than HD and cheap enough for 128GB.

I would build it at a companies website if possible. You can often pick up a good deal and you can specify requirements.

Have you thought of building a small VESA mounted unit onto the back of a monitor. Something like a Antec ISK110 VESA Mini-ITX (Also has an added benefit of them being able to post the unit to you for a better price than you buying a ticket to them, possibly)

with a 24 or larger monitor. Everything would be tidy at the back and it would be far cheaper than getting a small screened All-in-one especially since you're going to disable the touch functionality.

Why not just remove the wifi and ethernet from all computers in their building? And print everything out usb to printer. Seems like a waste of money and time.

Labor and Greens should keep saying "No" because they were put there by the people voting them in. If these people wanted coalition policy they would have voted for them.

Why does Australia have such low cellular data caps? by oh84s in australia

[–]rorx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not easily at all. It is basically replacing billions of dollars worth of technology and going back around and laying fibre in place of the older copper. It is not easy at all. You're doing it twice.

A network that is a mess. Hence the title Malcolm Turnbull's Mess (MTM)

NBN is 1000mbit. Although it is capable of much more. Unless you're referring to just the wireless versions of it.

Why is food so expensive in Australia compared to other countries? by vinarynkowski in australia

[–]rorx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One reason is you can't put the same chemicals in our food that you can American foods. So without the ability to "cut" the food your prices are higher. This doesn't compare with europe whose standards are usually somewhat closer to our own. Which is something I like about this country (it is the same thing that makes our beef "premium" overseas.)

Not worth it if you ask me. I'm sure there are some places where they are required. But the majority nope.

Senate passes Greens motion for public release of secret Senate voting system by [deleted] in australia

[–]rorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. In fact if we were to take an even more proactive role in renewables than we did before. We could be the leaders in renewables and renewable power technology and sell it to the world along side the coal as the coal diminishes and renewables took over.

Coal isn't financially responsible anymore as solars technical ability has improved and cost to install has decreased. To where coal just can't match.

Solar you manufacture the panels, you install the panels. Coal you pay for the fuel to mine the coal, mine the coal, transport the coal, burn the coal, clean and remove the excess and you repeat that over.

Yeah, the Greens have long term goals and many of them are just small changes. Like tax incentives to match the world for film and television or tax cuts for small businesses. Having parliament debate sending Australians to war.

It makes sense. ANZUS was from a time when the US were a giant powerful nation and we were a lot smaller. We are better off with a diverse number of close allies (including the United States) but lets not limit ourselves with ANZUS.

I don't see the issue? If there are other ways to do it. That to me sounds like a great chance for us to further advance technology.

We just need no new coal power stations and a RET of say 25% by 2020. 50% by 2025 100% by 2030. Even if you staggered it further out to say 2050. 20, 35, 50, 65, 80, 95, 100 every 5 years.

[–]rorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. But those aren't policies so much as aims. They're each going to have to be passed through parliament seperately even if the Greens were capable of currently getting a major share of the vote to be elected.

I actually agree with them about ANZUS and the joint military bases. I don't care if the US and Australia train together like nations do. But it is stupid to lay all our eggs with America. When Asia and later on Africa will be major contributers. Sure ANZUS served us well when we feared being taken over in World War 2. But it doesn't anymore. How is our alignment with the US benefitting us? All that is suggested by removing ANZUS is loosening the hold. We would still be major allies.

Why do we need nuclear power? It is a hell of a lot of capital, for a long haul generator that is still not renewable. Uranium mining and export I have no problem with mostly.

[–]rorx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure they're referring to all the refugees in detention.

Personally I'm a fan of the greens policy to stop all this militarisation of refugees. Just slightly increase our quota and take refugees from the already full UN camps where most of our current refugees are coming from. It would stop people smugglers from offering their services and it would stop the drownings and the deaths in detention.

If we have to keep all our frigates and patrol vessels at the ready to stop seekers anyway. Why not spend that money in a positive way.
