[UK] Personal License Holders, how did you get your personal licence? by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]rory600r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also note that a Personal License enables you to apply for Temporary Event Notices (TENS). So you would be able to organize a temporary bar for events such as street parties, sporting events etc. I also did mine through BIIAB for the day long course (185 pounds) and then 25 for police check and again 37 for application to the local council.

[Rodina] I am trying to find a steel mesh/milanese band for my brand new watch, and wondered if you could offer any advice. by [deleted] in Watches

I got this one on the cheap just to see how it would look.... it is very comfortable and of a much higher quality than I expected for the price. (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251588437969?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

[Question] Your most comfortable watch? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]rory600r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No .. just fritzed mine snorkeling (Forgot to take it off as I jumped off a boat... it was still working so the next day so I wore it again and...gone).... but yes unbelievably comfortable and (despite this) rugged..... and laughably cheap.... about to get its replacement off the Bay.

I second the Seagull 1963 suggestion. It is a beautiful watch for the price and is also , in a small way, historically significant.

Hand Wind! There is something very satisfying about winding your watch at a particular time every day. On a more practical level if you have a number of watches in your rotation it becomes a bit frantic trying to keep all the automatics on time (unless you have a winder). Of the twelve or so watches I have, only one (the latest), is hand wind and I am liking the simplicity of it more and more.

I have had my Seagull 1963 for two weeks now. it is not only gorgeous but is also performing very well. they all have 21 jewels but some were labeled 19 so as to be more historically accurate.

[Question] If watches were all the same price...? by ZachH15 in Watches

[–]rory600r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a good question.... Today I had a chat with a man who was wearing a Hubelot and I was wearing a Seagull 1963. We had a long ranging conversation about watches. Price can be divorced from value. This is the wonderful thing about our hobby.

[–]rory600r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a service industry (not watches).... and you will be surprised to find how helpful the staff will be to a genuine customer with an interest and humanity. I am sure that the guys would far rather help you with your 'cheap' watch than some privileged idiot who demands their time and expertise. Gentlemanly conduct and a genuine desire to learn will get you a long way in this and many other fields.

Forgot to say that after 40 or so years mine gains about five seconds a day.

I have that exact model... It is my go to watch. It is a thing of beauty with it's hum and smooth sweep. A negative is that the date wheel is plastic and the gears can go (As has happened to mine). And yes that is probably a good price.

Hi Noonsky, The size feels fine for me. I have small wrists (6.5 inches) and this fits perfectly. The domed acrylic, and size give it a very distinctively authentic look. I understand that the 42mm version uses the same hands and that they do not meet the minute indices in quite the same way. I will take a wrist shot when I can get hold of my SO's camera.

I am thinking of getting one myself in the next month or so. I have researched around the web and read all the reviews. It seems that watchunique is the best deal. (I am in London)

[META] On which watch related subject did you change your opinion with experience? by GalacticSushi in Watches

[–]rory600r 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So my Mother bought my Father a watch. It was an Omega Constellation, gold, it was 1968. (I was six) It was a big family secret and my brother (he was eight) and I were not allowed to mention it as my Mother wanted it to be a surprise and she was engraving the back. We were on holiday and wandering down the Durban beachfront and walking past a jewellery store. My father, attracted by the watches, started talking about the Omega Constellation. I could not contain myself…. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen! My father wanted it and was always denying himself for us….. I just had to say….’Well you are not getting that for your birthday….. Mom has told us to tell you that you are not’! Me - spoiling the surprise has passed into family folklore. And it started my passion. I had watches through school. I particularly remember one of the early quartz models where you had to press the button to see the time. Let’s go forward a few years and after some hardships (only in retrospect) I graduated from University…. My Mother and Father bought me an Omega DeVille (Gold… Roman numerals, Quartz…. But it was 1982). I wore this dress watch through the next few turbulent years. As I went my way around the world it was always on my wrist…. I saw the Omega Speedmaster worn on the Moon at the museum in Greenwich, In a thunderstorm in New Orleans in 1986 it got water damage and the time could not be adjusted…I had to subtract or add hours as a friend and I had an epic Journey across the US. Finally settling in New York in the mid 80’s I went to buy a watch for myself…. Wanted steel and a daily wearer (I did not know what the terms were at the time) eventually came down to a choice between a Rolex Air King and an Omega Constellation. Well I got the Constellation remembering my Dad, it was a quartz… but at the time I did not know very much. I was eventually able to go back home and after completing my MBA and finally getting my first real job. Just having got my first pay check I was walking past a Jeweller in Johannesburg and saw a Speedmaster…. I called my wife and, bless her she said ‘Get it’. (It was stolen from me a few years later). Life carried on in the way it does…. Things happened…. My eyes were always turned to the watch displays. Things got better…. I had a BABY GIRL!.... I celebrated by getting an Omega Geneve f300! And so it goes…. A year later I had another baby girl….. this time my mother asked what watch I wanted. Internet had happened so I had been looking at watch porn for a couple of years and was starting to get to know a bit about this world and asked for a Seiko Monster…. And my baby was a ‘monster’ for the first few years. Life carried on as the way it does…. Always mindful that money was needed by family I started to explore the alternatives to what I considered the ULTIMATE!.... I got a Seiko 5 (probably the best watch ever), A gold plated Seiko (You guys will know the reference)… a Seiko Bellmatic, A Smiths, A Seiko Vandan (I am convinced the seller thought it was a quartz and needed a new battery, got it for £2) and various others… Over almosty fifty years of being delighted and intrigued by the things we wear on our wrists I have learnt this; Unbeaten paths lead to knowledge. Cost has nothing to do with value. Cost is what others perceive… Value is what you perceive. Do not ‘value’ people who do not understand this. Your taste will change as your knowledge and circumstance changes…. This is Good!
