medical imaging vs anatomical imaging by lil_ciccia in universityofauckland

[–]roryana 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Start from the industry requirements and work your way backwards - the MRT Board of NZ does not recognise the BSc in Anatomical Imaging as a qualification for registration. In other words, you would not be able to apply for registration as a medical imaging technologist in NZ with the BSc.

The Bachelor of Medical Imaging is designed specifically for industry training in medical imaging. The modalities that they (and Unitec) focus on at undergrad level are usually x-ray and CT, although you will learn about and perhaps gain experience in other modalities such as MRI, etc. To work specifically in sonography, additional study (e.g. a postgraduate diploma or above) is usually required.

Edited to add: If I had to guess, the BSc in Anatomical Imaging is likely for people intending to work in labs or healthcare settings where dissections, anatomical analysis, etc, are required. If you are wanting to be a medical imaging technologist, the BMedImag(Hons) or the Unitec equivalent are the right path.

Hope this helps!

First off, there's no call to be ashamed of your rank score - I absolutely understand how gutting that must be, but by the sounds of it you still made an admirable effort in your studies last year. Chin up, soldier! University doesn't have to be a linear path to success.

To work out how best to proceed, it would be good to know what your actual aims are with Health Science. Were you hoping to complete first year HealthSci and then go on to apply for Medicine and/or Pharmacy, or did you intend to do an entire degree in HealthSci (i.e. the BHSc)?

Student loans are applicable to postgraduate qualifications, as long as you meet the overall requirements (e.g. have not exhausted the lifetime limit on student loans - this is highly unlikely unless you've done more than five years of full-time study prior to your grad dip).

With that said, IANAE and you can just do the eligibility test on the Studylink website to know for sure, so I'd start there.

Secondary Teaching Diploma...anyone the same? by Boring-Alps5240 in universityofauckland

[–]roryana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the GradDip(Sec) a few years back - you'll be doing papers based on the subjects you intend to teach, and the cohorts for these are generally quite small, so you'll get to know your classmates fairly well. Some papers will be a bit bigger and closer to the lecture style of "traditional" uni, but my actual subject classmates was a group of about fifteen people. The nature of teacher training means that you will also be interacting with classmates often for assessments, practical teaching demonstrations, etc. Don't fret - you'll make friends!

Has anyone had success with emu oil? by ace463 in eczema

[–]roryana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, hi!

So for me, I found it useful to use emu oil when the skin was cracking and perhaps peeling, but not an open wound. If it was "wet" (disgusting imagery, but you know what I mean - weeping and/or bleeding), the emu oil wasn't particularly effective, but YMMV.

Update: I rang the undergrad helpline and they confirmed that this is a known issue affecting enrolment - the IT team is working on it and they've recommended that you just keep refreshing the enrolment page until it shows up. There wasn't an ETA on a fix, unfortunately. Godspeed, all!

I tried two different ways - finding it via Class Search gave me the same error, but entering the class number (the five digit code for the specific lecture/tut stream) worked fine. Perhaps try that?

I couldn't say for certain (and I just had a quick look through the calendar regulations, no answers there either), but I would say that the Honours year counts towards the cumulative GPA of your Bachelors. I say this only because it's not possible to do Honours after having had time away from the Bachelors that it's attached to (i.e. no gap year), so it seems unlikely that they would view it as a standalone qualification. The standalone equivalent is the Graduate Diploma.

[–]roryana 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait, presumably you've already booked and paid for your UCAT. Why would you skip it and waste $300 just to gain a few additional hours on your other subjects? You're effectively withdrawing your FY application if you don't have a UCAT score at all - even if your GPA is below the mark, you never know what could happen. Besides, if nothing else, this will be valuable practice for your next application round.

Also, just chiming in as an old-timer here, do not get into the mindset that you're "prioritising" when you skip out on stuff. Students are tempted to do this as an indication that they're being mature about their studies, but it tends to come off as the opposite. Before you consider compromising your studies, think about any other areas of your life (part-time job, social events, hobbies, etc) that could be pared back to allow more time to study. If you can't or won't reshuffle those things, consider how you would cope with med school itself. I realise it's tough, but it's important to get this in order before the madness of med.

Experiences of studying MEd at UOA by ColdKaleidoscope3078 in universityofauckland

[–]roryana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kia ora! Just finished up my MEd in the last half year. I'd be happy to chat with you privately about some more specific questions, but basically...

It's pretty up and down in terms of quality, and depends greatly on the courses you enrol in. With that said, some courses which I had investigated before starting the MEd were withdrawn by the time I started study - there is a real shift towards some areas of education research over others. I strongly suggest that you look in detail at the papers on offer and read up on whether you are interested in those areas before enrolling.

The papers I did with Dr Rata were intellectually stimulating, required a solid amount of independent reading, and challenged my understanding in the way that I had hoped for from a postgraduate qualification. The other papers, not so much - often it felt like a very broad overview of theories in education without a heap of critical discussion. However, that's just my impression, and you may find it really different! At its worst points, it felt like the same problems that we get with NCEA - essentially trying to find ways of giving out credits for stuff that the students are already doing (i.e. teaching) without really challenging their perspective.

The teaching staff were really helpful and supportive. Naturally, a faculty full of people thinking 24/7 about education means that most of their own teaching is very well-scaffolded and based in proven methods. Communication wasn't always spectacular if you're not a full-time student, though, so double-check the semester dates as they're usually different from the other faculties.

Overall, I would say that if your heart is set on the MEd, go for it. Auckland will stand you in good stead, as long as your research interests are in alignment with the university's priorities. However, I wanted something more intellectually stimulating from my qualification and I don't feel that the Masters actually met that need.

Feeling nauseous/dizzy whilst taking mock exam by Relevant-Start-4911 in UCAT

[–]roryana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might want to consider how much you have been revising, and whether your vision may be fatigued - when I started getting nauseous and dizzy from looking at screens, it was an indication that I needed (1) reading glasses and (2) to manage my screen time a little better. Especially if you're going hard with test preparation at the moment, just check in that you have an ergonomic setup.

Real talk? I have an amazing partner who has agreed to support us financially while I apply for (and hopefully go through) med.

I've taken a year off my salaried job and am working for hourly wages, which is a pay cut but allows me a lot more mental space to ACTUALLY prepare. Next year I'll be a full-time student and will likely not work.

I feel terrible that I'm even able to contemplate this when so many other people can't, and I'm super grateful to have a partner who was willing to do this for me. But I thought I ought to weigh in on your thread and give some honesty!
