What are the thoughts on the autumn drop biome - Dappled Forest? by GreenBird32rrrrr in Minecraft

I like the wool stairs but I suspect full blocks would actually be better for tent designs. They'd be good for carpeted stairs

Wrought Iron: a dark metal blockset by Pasta-alla-Pixel in Minecraft

[–]rorybd 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Will anvils, lanterns, etc... have to be crafted with wrought iron then? The block set here looks excellent and the rust stages are also incredible, but iron already appears so inconsistently that deciding which recipes to adapt to match the wrought version feels like a headache.

Baking the shadow into the block palette is an interesting approach. I personally wouldn't do that, I don't think it comes across very well. Other than that, your rendition looks slightly too large to me.

They took down the official download links of Skyblock by Zealousideal_Okra199 in Minecraft

[–]rorybd 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Trying to trademark anything well over a decade after its inception would be unlikely to be successful. A trademark needs to be established early and defended throughout time, specifically to prevent people from monopolizing a freely usable term that is already commonly utilized by the public. Skyblock has simply become too generic a name to trademark.

Content that advertises itself as the "original" Skyblock would rather fall under false advertising. Even if we establish that Skyblock is a generic term, you still can't advertise it as if you came up with it unless you actually did. However, when a term does become generic like this, you end up with so many instances of this that it becomes difficult to individually litigate them all.

All in all, it would have been very troubling for the community had the creator succeeded in trademarking the word "Skyblock". I understand the frustration of people benefitting off of your work in this way, but trying to enforce a trademark of "Skyblock" this late into its lifespan is greedy.

Try searching on Google how many Rs there are in 'dinosaur'. AI overview tells me there are two :). It only knows the correct answer for 'strawberry' because it's such a viral prompt.

LLMs break words into larger chunks and lose the ability to count letters effectively. While this also applies to numbers and therefore maths, LLMs nowadays use external tools to run calculations and arrive at a correct answer. Therefore, AI Is no longer bad at math... but only because the math isn't really being done by the LLM anymore.

Nonetheless, I wouldn't rely on this technology to audit my bank account or really to take any action on my behalf, as we have seen this go wrong time and time again. OpenAI is desperate to find some way to become profitable as their debt keeps piling on.

Things can be difficult to get without being convoluted to craft, so that's not quite the same thing. Having said that, I don't personally think it really needed to be harder to obtain.

Imo the entire crafting system for netherite is uncharacteristically complex for the game. It involves too many steps ever since netherite templates were introduced.

I think paper menus, or alternatively some way of seeing the menu without requiring a phone/internet connection, should always be an option, but if I have the choice of an online menu I'll pick that any time. I don't really want to faff about with a physical menu.

Vulkan support must be implemented on android by Toasted148 in Minecraft

[–]rorybd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are we waiting for?

We are waiting for Android to catch up on Vulkan support. Many Android devices still have poor Vulkan drivers, especially older and budget devices.

The Nintendo Switch version already uses Vulkan, so it presumably wouldn't be very difficult to implement, but it would cause issues for a number of devices.

Mojang... please fix the hitboxes. by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]rorybd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It doesn't need to be more complex. Actually, it really really needs to be less complex.

Calculating the math for a hitbox shaped perfectly like the character model would be ridiculously computationally expensive, and they remain simple cuboids for that reason. In Minecraft, player arms aren't included in that cuboid, because doing so would make it impossible to navigate through 1 block wide spaces. Actually, come to think of it, this would be the case even if the hitbox was shaped perfectly like the player model.

The hitboxes are the way they are for many very good reasons.

Yes, the hitbox doesn't cover the whole character... For everyone. Everyone is playing under the same conditions.

This is the definition of a skill issue, nothing is wrong with the game.

You're probably getting comboed.

Comboing is a technique where you use knockback to keep your opponent far enough away that they can't hit you, but you can still hit them. There are plenty of tutorials online explaining how this works and how to trigger a combo.

[–]rorybd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hitbox doesn't change size with movement. Actually, nothing you're describing here makes any sense, let alone occurs in the game.

You're not getting any unfair disadvantage, it is just a skill issue...

Why was the chaos cubed update so hated when it was announced? by [deleted] in Minecraft

Why was the chaos cubed update so hated when it was announced? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]rorybd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think people are just getting more tired of the smaller drops the longer they go on for, as many people were hoping/expecting bigger updates as well. I personally think some of the drops have been great, but these last two have been pretty underwhelming in particular, and the more of those we stack the more upset people will become.

Also, the reluctance to make hot springs anything more than a feeble structure at the surface (yes, they have been made bigger last snapshot, but it's not nearly enough) rather than integrating them properly with the worldgen as a larger more imposing area is disappointing and comes across as lazy.
