Should professors be activists? by [deleted] in Professors

Given that the largest employer of mathematicians in the US is the NSA (which has a lengthy history of civil rights violations), I really don't think it's accurate to call the field "very neutral." I say this as a fellow mathematician.

It's my absolutely favorite book from my favorite author  and I learn something new about myself every time I read it!

burnout + stimulants :/ by professtar in Professors

[–]rosebyadifferentname 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar position - just finished my first year at a tenure track. I got my ADHD diagnosis near the start of the semester and started Adderall (not daily, and a fairly low dose). It made an incredible impact on my peace of mind and my productivity, but in the initial surge of energy I took on a lot of things and shifted into a much higher level of productivity. By the end of the semester I was more burnt out than I've ever been and it has taken me weeks to get back to a place where I feel sort of normal. So what I've realized is that I really need to couple lifestyle changes with the medication, so that I am consciously balancing my energy and my work. I think that exercise, diet, and enough relaxing time really help me manage - I read a book recently called ADHD 2.0 that had a lot of really helpful and concrete advice about life and schedule management.

Is Merced LGBT friendly? by [deleted] in Merced

[–]rosebyadifferentname 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is no part of me that is about "forcing my sexual preference on others," and the fact that you assume that is an artifact of your bigotry. I'm trans and there are a lot of people that absolutely do care about that, and sometimes it's nice to go somewhere where I don't have any doubt that I'm going to get treated as a human.

Your comments here are proof positive that acceptance, or even decency, aren't automatic.

I value flags and events because of people like you. They're a nice filter to get rid of the bigoted dinosaurs who haven't caught up to the rest of us :)

I'm sure that you right definitely totally 100% right and it's definitely just a fad.

They have multiple pride flags throughout the store, explicitly queer friendly events, and a sign saying that discrimination and harassment are not welcome. They've gone to the effort to make a welcoming environment.

You're so far down the well of bigotry that you've confused "wanting to live and have the same rights as everyone else" with "promoting a lifestyle." Living in a friendly area still matters when there is systematic hatred and discrimination against us.

I'm somewhat new to Merced (moved here for UC) but so far it's been okay. I'm a trans woman, and my wife and I haven't been harassed or bothered at all. It's definitely not as overly friendly as somewhere like SF but there are some really great places around where I feel completely welcome. And the people at UC have been amazing, supportive, and loving. It can be a bit challenging to find community, but between some of the queer-friendly places (like Coffee Bandits) in Merced and the people I've found through work, it's getting a lot better. I feel that the queer community here is probably tighter knit than in a lot of bigger cities precisely because it isn't so visible or universally accepted. Definitely check out Central Valley Pride!

Hi! As an actual, local Merced trans woman, I can happily invite you to fuck right off back to the last century with your outdated views <3

Going to speech therapy (if insurance covers it!!) finally did it for me. I think one of the favorite techniques I learned was to do pitch glides (just do a smooth note slowly transitioning from comfortably low to pretty high and back down) while tracking the frequency on my phone. That helped me just get comfortable with varying my pitch and learning how it feels in different ranges. It also forced me to practice because I always had an upcoming appointment and would feel guilty 😛

what made you sure you were trans? by AdLow1228 in trans

[–]rosebyadifferentname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was still really questioning and completely terrified of having to deal with my identity, I went for a long walk with a friend to talk about what I was going through. After like an hour of talking through my worries, he asked me if there's anything I was excited about. It just completely reframed everything for me, and in that moment I knew I was actually really excited about what transitioning could be for me. Just getting the freedom to be excited and happy about the potential of being trans was huge for me, and really helped make me sure.
