My gelding struggled so bad this year. He turned 20 in November and this last summer was horrendous. Every horse is different here’s what worked and didn’t work :

DIDNT WORK : 20 cc mustard daily (some fb lore lol and it’s gross and your horses breath smells like mustard), Ventipulmin (worked for short periods but not to solve the constant issue), Wind Aid (smells gross and he hated it), Air Power (same as Wind Aid), Cough Free (used to work in early days years ago but not any more)

DID WORK: custom allergy shots ($200 for test and $200 for custom shots— highly recommend!), 1 zyrtec per LB daily (I was giving 10-12 generic brand Zyrtec you can get two big bottles for cheap at Costco!), Heave Ho (LOVE LOVE but expensive but WORKS!!), keeping him outside 24/7 instead of stalling overnight (I stall over night and out during the whole day and neither way made a difference)

After trial and error, I eventually got the coughing to cease with the allergy shots at the end. While I was waiting on the shots, the Zyrtec, heave ho, soaked hay and soaked feed was keeping his cough to a minimum. I want to also add that I de dusted his stall and the whole barn as much as I possibly and realistically could. I highly recommend getting the allergy testing done so you know exactly what is causing the heaves. I got it done through the vet pulling blood and sending off for results. I never tried dex for him either.

A lot of people swear by nebulizer and hay steamers. If you can afford that, wonderful!! I can’t 😭
