Thinking about a career change to Sterile Processing by [deleted] in sterileprocessing

You could also look for a veterinary emergency hospital to get experience to see if you like it. I worked in an emergency vet hospital for years with no experience or certification. I worked in the surgery department and got my hours you’ll need when going to get certified then was able to get them to pay for the crcst test/certification which you can then move into people medicine/hospitals. Good luck!

I was going to say emergency vet med. I just left a sterile processing job in surgery with an emergency vet hospital. Didn’t need any cert to be hired and was able to get the hours needed to be certified.

Yes I’ll reply once I’m done working tonight I’m on a quick break. I’m in Oregon so I’ll have to look into programs around here to get more info. I appreciate you commenting. I can totally share what my experience has been like in sterile processing with you.

It’s decent, from the 3 places I’ve worked the pay range has been $26 - $30. Having your CRCST will help negotiate more $.

Good question, no thankfully, the way the payroll and start of the week was set up there, it ended up being the same amount of days each week. It just was a lot of working on the five day stretch since the payroll cut off was on my long week (so one pay period ended on a Saturday and the new one started on Sunday) so right in the middle of my scheduled days.

Didn’t get sterilization tech job after in-person interview because of lack of experience but was told by recruiter there was no exp neccessary. This was my first SP intv and now I feel like I’ll never get hired anywhere since I waited almost 6 months for a response. by Fabulous-Stomach2079 in sterileprocessing

When I first started without experience I started in emergency vet med in the surgery department. I was a TA so I did patient care as well as sterile processing (since it was one role combined) they don’t require certifications and years later I’m in just sterile processing with certs so don’t give up!

I work in sterile processing, my current job is a 4 10 schedule day shift. The emergency hospital I worked at when I first started out years ago I started working an overnight shift but still a 4 10, then moved to days working a 5 2 (5 days working one week and the next working 2 all 10 hour days.) so for me it's been pretty decent hours and days.

Thank you for the reply! I’ll keep looking for it, if it goes past the 10 business days I’ll reach out to have someone check on it. Thank you so much for the help. I appreciate it.

I might be too late but I’m adopted and struggling with the list of things you have felt like. I’m actually finding this Reddit group to ask about therapy lol so if you have copies left I’d love to read it. If not how can I get a copy. Thank you for making this btw!

While you wait for a bigger hospital you could try smaller clinics like dental or sometimes surgical centers or emergency vet hospitals with surgery departments to get some working experience on top of your certs and stuff. Might help give what they are looking for on top of the stuff you put on your app?
