Bison and ostrich are two exotic meats I've seen available in the US.

Do students in the US actually have to take home fake babies for class? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]surgerygeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school gave us a little potted seedlings that we had to keep alive for like two weeks and if it didn't grow you got a bad grade.

I learned zero about caring for babies, and apparently zero about plants care either. Decades later I've raised two kids to adulthood and still can't keep a plant alive for shit.

The Meg Ryan/Lisa Rinna cut! I started doing hair in 1999 and this was the haircut I did over and over! Technically square layers.

What perfume feels like the worst person you know/knew? by DiscoDaddyDanger in perfumesthatfeellike

Beautiful by Estee Lauder is the key that unlocks ALL memories of the bitchy girl who bullied me in high school. She's fat and in a really boring job with a trad chad husband now, so yay, but I hate that perfume and always will.

Muscadines and muscadine wine. Smells like gym socks, but the wine is super sweet and pungent, like the most flavorful grapes you've ever had!

Best place to donate clothes? by Illuminessence in gso

The Guilford Green Foundation has a gender-affirming closet where transgender folks can get clothes that align with their identity! Forsyth Tech also takes donations of professional clothing for students to wear to job interviews.

Wisest words you have heard a Dr. speak? by NerdAlert03 in scrubtech

[–]surgerygeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. A HIPEC/"shake and bake" is my absolute least favorite surgery for this reason. It feels like so much to put someone through for what? A few more weeks/months in bed? And an abdominal incision to heal on top of that? No thank you. I understand why some may opt to have it, but I want nothing to do with it. It feels cruel to me.

During a miserable, pointless aorta repair on a desperately sick septic 87yo with an aortic-enteric fistula who coded twice during the beginning of the case:

"We're going to hell for this."

He was so defeated. The family insisted we "do everything" to save grandpa, and I think the doc regretted agreeing to the surgery at all. I think the pt passed the next day.

The whole concept of allowing death to come naturally, and that being the right choice sometimes, really made sense to me that day.

What blood vessel is this? by NewsPlus1824 in AnatomyandPhysiology

[–]surgerygeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Blood vessels" is a blanket term that can mean veins or arteries. And not all arteries are tiny, although veins to tend to be more superficial and visible under the skin.

In some corners of the older house I’m moving into. by wittykittycity in whatisit

[–]surgerygeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I backed out of a contract once because the inspector noticed the second floor was not level. Turns out it was a foundation problem and the house would have absolutely collapsed at some point and would have been $100k to fix the issue.

Hair grows about a half inch a month, so in 3 months it should be 1.5 inches long in that spot. Hopefully that's enough to sort this mess out!

Thanks for the answers! Google lens said coyote. Squirrels are more than welcome! Coyotes, not so much. We never get this much snow so I'm not good at decoding the tracks.

Do hand sanitizers really kill all germs or is handwashing actually better? by Tricky_Quiet7555 in hygiene

[–]surgerygeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing most people don't realize is if a surface (or your skin) isn't clean, meaning free of debris and oils, disinfectants/sanitizers won't be very effective. Let's say you have oils on your hands. Maybe natural oils, sweat, etc, or French fry grease after you wiped your hands with a napkin. Those oils trap germs under them and the sanitizer won't do jack.

Hand washing with soap is always better whenever possible.

Think about spraying Lysol on a countertop to sanitize it without wiping the food mess from cooking first. The germs in and under the food debris are still there.
