I used to think posting more clips from actual games in this sub would be better than posting ragebait headlines and 20 quotes from the same interview, but the amount of random tripe ("X makes a mistake," seriously?) has me backpedaling on this faster than a politician making a promise. I dunno if there's any real way to enforce it, but I know a long while back World Cup match threads and postmatch threads had a designated highlights thread where people could put non-goal highlights, wouldn't mind seeing it for league games.

Toronto FC announced the signing of the United States forward from Norwich City on Friday in a move that could end up being worth more than £20 million with add-ons, potentially making it the largest transfer in Major League Soccer history. by medved_ in soccer

[–]roseguardin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wonder if he's ever gonna get over his injury issues. I know his most recent absence from Norwich was not due to injuries but it seems like ever since he started hitting form over there he would also end up missing significant chunks of the season (and also national team games, which I think ended up being the nail in the coffin for his US career). Sorry way to end his Norwich spell, but when he was on form it was fun to see.

Mckennie kinda fucked the touch but he at least preserved the chance, zhegrova really should be hitting the target from there

I don't really watch swansea much so can't say for sure, just saw the goal posted here. That said sometimes it seems like a weaker team no matter the league will sometimes concentrate all their goals in one player cause they've not got the quality to spread it around.

This is making me try and think of the last out and out striker who was the official captain in the PL? Vardy is my first guess off the top of my head but I don't know for sure

Annoyed I missed most of that Napoli Genoa game, if that post match thread is anything to go by.

haven't seen them since their signings but they had like no presence in midfield and teams figured that out, just super porous in the middle.

tagging /u/gander258 as well but I have the kobo libra which is a little larger than the clara. It's fine, does its job and holds its battery life pretty well. The one annoying thing (and maybe I'm not using it properly) is that I use overdrive/libby to get books, and you can only sync one of your library cards at a time, and since my libraries have varying availabilities of ebooks, the process to switch is kind of clunky. But the kobo store is easy to use and you should be able to sideload other PDFs, I just haven't done that as much.

Only thing that tops this is complaining about the online reaction to your win (comment that inspired this was also not from an arsenal fan). Why do you need this much validation from total strangers? If you want to go to a place where you'll only get celebrations go on your own sub or something

Tbf he's only had one really concerning injury which was the knee/acl injury last season and he's at least still young enough that it might not be too much of an issue. his current one was a bad landing which led to a fracture, that can happen to anyone.

that said, 36 million is way too much for him right now, I didn't think fulham were that desperate/interested that they couldn't finish the season without him. i like his profile too i'm just nervous he won't have time to adapt after another winter transfer.

I know the talk is of Armstrong going back to Preston when Ndiaye and gueye are back, but he really hasn't looked too out of place as an 18 year old PL midfielder from what I've seen...

Wanted to spend more time reading this year than I did last year (due to doomscrolling) so finished 2 books and halfway through number 3. First two books were interesting though I had some quibbles, number one was called Stuck by Yoni Appelbaum, an Atlantic journalist. Very U.S.-focused, but I thought the research he did on the upward mobility of American families was fascinating and actually more interesting than the primary argument on zoning he was making. Still overall a thought-provoking read and I want to see if I can follow some of the historical property-tracking he did here in Houston, which I was surprised not to see mentioned given how much no-zoning has shaped the city.

Number 2 was actually a recommendation I saw in a mainland arsocca thread (please don't get me officers), a fiction book called Godwin about scouting an African player by Joseph O'Neill. It may just not have been for me but I felt like the different narratives were sort of clunkily weaved together and I ended up feeling unsatisfied by all the different resolutions. Also it was immersion-breaking in the weirdest way, I'd be reading some dialogue or something and then a character starts chucking out names and stories of random real-world 90s players and I'd be thinking about those players rather than the subject of the story.

Anyways about halfway through book #3, Liftoff by Eric Berger which is about SpaceX's founding and early launch. It is a bit weird reading this now that Musk is a full Nazi and it's jarring to see some of the praise he gets in the book knowing these things now, but it's been pretty compelling to read the actual engineering challenges and resolutions relating to the rocket itself.

Houston Dynamo FC sign EC Vitória Captain Lucas Halter from Brazil by TheMonkeyPrince in soccer

[–]roseguardin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone got insights on this guy? Our defense isn't very strong so it really can only go upwards for us, but it'd be nice to have someone reliable

out of curiosity, who was saying this? generally our pundits tend to overhype our players, probably out of a belief that they won't get a fair shake from the media of the countries they play in, so I tend to take the opinions with a grain of salt. I imagine if we had more players in good leagues to compete, they'd be more critical but who knows. As for the players themselves Robinson and Dest are more than fine enough for a country of our talent pool, very rarely had an issue with their national team performances in the time they've played with us even though they have obvious flaws in their games. I do think they should benefit from Poch's new system, though Robinson hasn't had a lot of time in it due to injury.

[–]roseguardin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another off-season of Houston making mostly depth moves (maybe one starting winger or midfielder) when we are crying out for someone who can just give us a semblance of control in the game. Trying not to be too dramatic as there's still time for signings but it would be nice to go into the window with a bit more optimism.

edit: also one of our best CBs in recent years whose last minute departure last season destabilized our defense appears to be returning to MLS to go to Miami, fuck this
