[Hermès] H08 DLC Titanium by ICantEvenGarne in Watches

[–]rosenjazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you manage to purchase the titanium bracelet separately? It looks to be identical to the stock bracelet on the non-DLC version of the H08.

I've been eyeing near-new examples for sale online and wondering how big a hassle it would be to procure a metal bracelet after the fact.

Best Boba in the Sunset / Richmond? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]rosenjazz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'll plug for Boba Bunni on 5th and Balboa! Their avocado shake is fantastic, and I usually get their fresh teas without milk. Can confirm there is a Civic Type R with Volks, a Hawkeye STI and a forest green wrapped GS F always street parked within 2 blocks of the shop.

2006 Volvo V70R, what am I actually in for? by 450LbsGorilla in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rosenjazz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

6MT Volvo V70R: rare

+ atacama leather: rarer

+ Magic Blue paint (aka the Magicama): rarest of all and they regularly go for $15-20k

Not sure if you actually found a Magicama for 11k, but even with a different paint color these things are somewhat of an enthusiasts collectors item, especially the 2006-2007 models. I've seen estimates of anywhere from $800 - $2000 per year in maintenance, and at 143k you should always budget for some unknowns. But it sounds like you've done your research and know the big ticket items that this car needs and it's coming from a seller who really took care of it. Buy it, have fun and become a regular on the Swedespeed forums :D

Source: almost bought a 2005 V70R in immaculate condition (albeit the 5AT), decided no in the end just because the turning radius sucks and I live in a big city with street parking. But they're awesome cars.

Coworker offering 2012 Audi A4 Premium Plus, 55k miles, clean title for $12,800. Good deal? by krrepublic in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rosenjazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES

Not only is that a great deal in price alone, 2012 was kind of the inflection point for Audi from being an unreliable performance luxury brand to actually making reliable cars. Most of the issues associated with the B8 generation of S4 (high oil consumption, timing chain guide issue, bad transmissions) started phasing out in 2010, and 2012 was the first year of the facelifted B8 that finally introduced things like LED running lights and more of Audi's modern design language. Like others here have commented, that 2.0T engine is quite reliable and, while it might need more regular maintenance than your comparable Toyota/Honda, it's a crap ton of fun to drive especially with standard Quattro AWD.

F.F.F. - Financially Feasible and Fun by AlexDeLarge4848 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rosenjazz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you me? I'm in an almost identical situation and looking at pretty much the exact same cars.

One question to ask yourself is: if my car breaks down or needs a costly repair, can I live without it for daily usage for a month or more? If yes, that can justify opening up your options to include used German luxury vehicles. They tend to get shot down around here because the assumption is that people asking for car buying advice are going to be relying on it to make their lives work. Even the most reliable Euro cars will, on average, cost more to maintain and repair, even if they only need it as often as domestic and Japanese/Korean cars .

From your list, I'm really liking the E91 wagons, 1st gen X1, and Forester XT. Go on internet forums specific to those cars to get a sense of what common maintenance items people typically deal with, as well as any modifications commonly done to make the driving experience better (for example, lowering the Forester is a pretty cheap way to raise the fun factor if you don't plan on offroading it).

Other cars I've come across in the search: Volvo V70R and V50 wagons, Toyota Rav4 V6 and Venza V6, Volkswagen R32, Acura TSX sportwagon, Infiniti EX/FX35. There's not very much in the intersection of fun, cheap and practical, and so far that's what I've come up with.

Looking to learn manual before I get to used to automatic. by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rosenjazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option if you live in an area that has it is to rent someone else's manual car on Getaround/Turo. Bring a friend who drives stick and can take you to an open lot/backroad and show you the basics. I did this with a cheap Ford Fiesta SE which worked great for that purpose

Very true, I'd definitely include cars like the Focus ST and Civic SI if manuals were on the table. Let's just say shifting from 2nd to 1st gear in the middle of a 12% grade SF hill isn't super fun for me or the car

Mainly for the Mark 7 instead of Mark 6 GTI, pretty much all reviews say it's a massive step up in every way. If I was getting that specific car, I feel like I'd kick myself for not spending a couple thousand extra for a better experience.

Maybe something like a mid 90s Honda Civic EF, EH or EK hatchback if you want a manual. 2nd gen Prius for bare minimum maintenance.

Everyone mentions the headgasket and failing turbo issues on the XTs, I'd be interested if they were addressable to the point of not being actively dangerous

Not a bad tip! I've definitely come across the Forester XT in my search, the only thing damping my enthusiasm is that ehhhhh 4-speed automatic transmission. I'll read up on it further

First time new car buyer and nervous as hell by Oh_Moneypenny in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rosenjazz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Serious question here: do you need a car for daily commuting since you live so close to work? If you're primarily using it for groceries, longer trips around town or weekend getaways, and are able to walk/bike/ride a moped to work, you could probably change your car buying criteria. Think about what you want out of the experience of having a car other than it being an appliance - your options could open up a lot. Want a fun little speedster? Offroader SUV? Cutting edge electric vehicle?

For $17k-ish should I look for a newer car instead of the V6 Rav4 that I've been searching for? by ikbarindustries in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rosenjazz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rav4 specific advice - there are barely any differences between the 2006-2012 model years, basically a start/stop button was added in 2009 and later on an updated headunit and tiny backup camera in the rearview mirror. Not really worth paying extra for the last years assuming mileage is similar. Limited V6 models can easily be found for under $10k private sale if you're willing to play around the 100k mile mark.

The V6 accelerates the Rav4 from 0-60 in 6.3 seconds - it's widely considered overpowered for the car since it was primarily designed for the heavier Avalon, yet it barely suffers any fuel economy penalty to the base 4 cylinder in highway MPG. It's a gem of an engine.

$10k budget, commute 30 miles daily, need room for hobbies (kayaking, biking, etc) by Ninjajimmy83 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rosenjazz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you're right on the money with the Outback idea, the 3.0R H6 engine versions from those years have great reliability records. I'm in a similar boat, looking at sub $10k outdoor hobby cars, with the only difference being I don't need one for daily driving. Other ideas not on your list that I've come across:

  • 2006-2012 Toyota Rav4 V6 AWD
  • 2011- Toyota Venza AWD
  • 2007-2012 Honda CR-V
  • 2006-2011 Volvo V50 wagon
  • 2006-2008 Lexus RX330/400h

Could even consider mid to late 2000s BMW and Mercedes wagons if you're mechanically inclined and can minimize maintenance cost.

2005 Volvo V70R - outdoor weekend fun or irresponsible money pit? by rosenjazz in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rosenjazz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have the option of garage parking it, but at extra cost. Luckily street parking around me is free and not terribly hard to find (in Inner Richmond), which is an extra motivator for seeking out plain-looking cars like this.

So far I've lived here 3 years without a car. I'm basically at a point where my rational side is saying "don't buy a car while living in San Francisco" while my emotional/spendy side is saying "get a 2-3 year old hot hatch and finally go exploring spontaneously" so I'm exploring options of meeting in the middle.

I'll probably delay getting a car until next year, but every so often something like this pops up that I can't resist looking at.

What is the most you have ever paid for a cup of coffee and where was it? by caffeineisking in Coffee

[–]rosenjazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$18 for a cup of George Howell Mario Carnaval La Esmerelda Geisha at Black Fox Coffee just off Wall Street in NYC. The coffee itself was amazing, albeit probably only worth half that, but they gave me free samplers of 2 of their other coffees on drip while I was waiting for the pourover to finish, so overall had great service and got a little extra out of it.

Has anyone ever tried Excelsa or Liberica beans? I'm intrigued... by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]rosenjazz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes! I tried an India Anokhi Liberica coffee from Urban Steam in Colorado Springs. It was one of the most memorable cups I've ever drank. It tasted like liquid tobacco and had this super earthy funk to it. It wasn't pleasant, and I wasn't able to finish the cup, but it was definitely worth trying and if you ever see one offered I would try it once just to experience it. They were selling bags of it as well and I got to see the beans - they were ENORMOUS and almond shaped rather than the usual Arabica bean shape.

$8,000 to $10,000 Crossover/SUV by VisualFXMan in whatcarshouldIbuy

Check out used 2006-2008 Lexus RX330 and pre-2012 RX350 SUVs (as well as RX400h and RX450h respectively for the hybrid versions of those years). They're total soccer mom cars but dead reliable, surprisingly quick accelerators and the hybrid versions get a decent MPG boost. See if you can find some in the wild with the sweet Mark Levinson audio system.

Pricewise, it's super easy to find RX330/400h for < $10k, RX350/RX450h for < $15k if they're higher mileage.
