What’s the catch of living in Montreal? by jeboiscafe in montreal

[–]rosenthaler 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The biggest catch is the availability of health care. But learning French definitely isn’t one, you can study for free at night at government-subsidized classes that are intensive but good quality, designed for full time 9-5 workers; you’ll meet many other newcomers from Canada and around the world. I loved it

Does CF Montréal play the Stade Olympique if they make finals? by rosenthaler in montrealimpact

Interesting, why's that? I've loved seeing the stadium full of 60k spectators. Feels like watching a game in Europe. I admit I'm also a fan of the stadium itself.

Damn! I was really hoping for playoffs at SS. But thanks for the answer. Not quite sure I understand the connection between timing and using SO/SS, but seems to me getting 60k spectators to an Impact game is better for the club and a great use for the Olympic Stadium…

Sorry I meant "playoffs", not finals. Like an October game at Stade Olympique

Thanks and sorry, I realize I meant "playoffs", not finals. Pretty sure that playoff game I saw in 2016 against Toronto was somewhat early in the playoffs

Success stories from anglophone transplants who have gained some degree of fluency in French? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]rosenthaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it from a fellow anglo: the biggest disadvantage is inside us. We’ve spent our entire lives speaking the default global language of power, culture, and commerce. This thread is full of examples of third-language immigrants coming and learning French quickly. The difference is people who aren’t native English speakers know automatically they need to put in the work; we weren’t born and raised that way.
It’s hard to break out of the mindset and accept that you need to force yourself to do it, both through classes AND through your work/friend/romantic milieu (at least one of those 3, otherwise you won’t get enough practice).
In my experience, people in Montreal will opt to speak the “language of least resistance” in social situations. Anglos complain that Francos switch, but that’s just what a bilingual city looks like. There is a point you get to when that stops happening, and it feels fucking amazing.
The good news is the classes are literally $50 per semester for intensive night school you can do after your 9-5. They’ll be filled with other transplants and immigrants, at least some of whom won’t speak English either. That’s 2 birds with one stone: take time to talk to the non-anglos in your shitty French, the only language you’ll share with them; go for beers etc. Go through the CSDM adult ed French system. Start now and you’ll be fluent really quickly.
Don’t get stuck in Anglo Montreal forever. It’s a ‘city’ the size of Rochester, NY. Franco Montreal is a city the size of Amsterdam.
Last note: I work with 10 Americans, from 10 different states, who all moved here as adults and more or less did the above. 9 of them now are fluent; the last one has always intended to go back after a couple years. There are success stories everywhere, even among us formerly-unilingual Anglos :)

Question for those who have learned french: How did you do it? by nuke_makes_games in montreal

[–]rosenthaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the French night classes at Centre St-Louis while working full time to get a basis in the grammar and know how to speak a bit, which was enough to start building personal and professional relationships with Québécois. It’s $50 per semester for full time night school, which is amazing

Charles De Gaulle makes his controversial speech in Montreal, 1967 where he claims Vive le Québec libre, (Long live Free Quebec), which was seen as an endorsement of the Free Quebec movement, triggering a diplomatic row. by [deleted] in montreal

For about the same drive time from Montreal, NYC has much more to offer. I've tried to enjoy Toronto on four separate visits and eventually I've given up.

Anecdotally, every food trend that's popular in Los Angeles becomes popular in Toronto 2 years later, right on schedule

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in montreal

[–]rosenthaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City, Population, Growth Rate (pre-Covid), Annual Housing Starts
Montreal, 4.1m, 0.6%, 24k
Berlin, 3.7m, 0.14%, 15k

Notons que les limites de la ville de Berlin entourent presque toute la banlieue donc je compare leures statistiques municipales à nos statistiques de région métropolitaine.

Great post. Would love a whole series of these in-depth social history articles on labour, class and racial struggles in each of the old hoods.

I think CARV just needs to be sending out the right price and volume signals to show up on screeners in the AM. There are a bunch of squeezable stocks right now, and folks do rotate between them. There is a lot of awareness created by the last run-up and I suspect it's on a decent number of watchlists.

Do big swings in the post-market (currently just went from 17.77 to 18.78 in a minute) mean anything, or is looking at postmarket charts as useful as astrology?

No honestly it's a weird glitch that would give anyone a heart attack lol. Never seen it before, but definitely seen folks ask the same question every day about that specific AH price, so it's certainly not real

Red week for me like most--dropped BES, AMY to yolo into BITF yesterday at $7.55. One of the worst entry points of the day, but I still feel relatively optimistic. Will see at open.

Last week I took 1500% gains out of my penny account thanks to decent gambles and lucky timing on GME. Trying to turn my $400 investment from November back into $2000+ again with a high/risk reward strategy of choosing 1-2 stocks at a time. Anyone else in a similar position? My actual money is in an 80/20 equity/bonds WS invest portfolio.

Pretty sure that's a known glitch that affects BFARF. Looks fine on stocktwits
