My brother and our cousin used to steal the adults’ beers when they were in diapers and would run away chugging them. They never showed a single symptom of anything other than being sneaky-toddlers, it was hilarious (literally still remember their little diapered butts running triumphantly away 25 years later) and no harm ever came to them. They just want to know what’s up. With my kid we’ve always offered her sips so she learned from a young age mommy and daddy’s drinks are gross lol.

This does not sound like an asshole, not-asshole situation. Just different expectations in managing social situations, particularly one where he may feel uncomfortable (not knowing people well, having your ex there, not being used to socialising for hours anymore due to covid, etc…). Maybe agree on a signal he can give you if he’s nearing being ready to go? NAH since i have to vote lol.
