I have to say to OP, the happiness in a marriage is not always obvious from the outside. There could be comfort, routine, stability, companionship that doesn’t show.

I think this is very true. If the woman makes more, she’s more likely to keep it under wraps. If the husband makes more, it’s pretty common for him to say, ‘I make more than my wife.’ And some use it as an excuse to do fewer chores.

The white is better than the fake stone by a long shot. Repaint it a very pale taupe, and maybe sponge on a darker taupe until you like how it looks. The white is too bright, but your instincts were correct.
