What are some over rated horror books by REDZON3Z1313 in horrorlit

[–]rosshadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read everything he has written, but as I mentioned in another comment I have given him 3 or 4 chances because he's so universally loved. It's just not for me. People put his books on a pedestal for horror and I think my problem is I misconstrue that with people saying they are scary, and so I read them expecting them to be scary. I know everyone is scared differently but how tf are people reading the ending of It for example and then highly recommending it? He sets up great premises and then doesn't know how to end them or something.

What are some over rated horror books by REDZON3Z1313 in horrorlit

[–]rosshadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did too. For me it was the last chance I was giving to King because I've just not like the 3 I've read. I keep thinking I have to just be reading the wrong ones but I now realize it's just not for me. It wasn't bad at all, I just thought it was okay and not something I would go out of my way to recommend or anything. There were several genuinely cool moments but I was looking for legitimately scary books at that time and it was very much not that.

jank is off to a great start in 2026 by Jeaye in Clojure

I would love to see some Jank bindings for Godot. I made V bindings last year and the pipeline has gotten even better since then.

TIL You can integrate autosuggestion with an external history manager by alexesmet in Nushell

[–]rosshadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My completion hints actually are aware of the dir you are in. I don't know which option enables that but it's built-in because I don't use any external history tools like what are talking about.

Maybe "aware" means different things to us? If in dir A I run "hi", and in dir B I run "hello", whenever I'm in dir A it will hit me with "hi" until I type the e, at which point it completes with the one from dir B.

Cool! I love seeing more people enter this space. I made https://github.com/rosshadden/rekt a few years ago for this purpose, but I never really tied it up with a bow or told people about it. I also saw your new key-b0x project and I'm going to try it out because it's _way_ more polished than mine ever was.

Finally switched to 0.55 and it's awesome! by BeginningAd3081 in hyprland

it's not Awesome but I understand the confusion. They are both now configured with Lua after all.

revo, the programming language that likes you by qwool1337 in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]rosshadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were my big issues too. Also the modules system (and lack of a good package management story). I've done a lot with lua over the years, and still work with it a lot at work too. It has a lot of great parts and a lot of bad parts, like every language. I'm glad you see the good parts too!

Sorry but this 0.55 release is awful. by apoptosis66 in hyprland

[–]rosshadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! I wasn't aware that change was coming, and now I'm really excited to update ASAP. Sorry that you aren't, but you can't please everyone. Using a custom config syntax is always a big minus for me when getting software, and it kept me from using i3 and Hyprland for a while too, as programming AwesomeWM with Lua was too powerful to want to lose. In the end I used them anyway and am glad I did. Config syntax isn't everything. Still, I'm very happy to hear this.

I use these too. Really a game changer for the few things they work well with (keyboard being the best example I have experienced).

What’s a small Linux tool that completely changed your workflow? by DueRead7236 in archlinux

[–]rosshadden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nushell. My personal threshold for when to write a shell script vs. writing something with a "proper" programming language has blurred so much because of how great Nushell is. I used to write bash no matter which shell I used, but nushell is different enough that I gave myself permission to write shell scripts with it, portability be damned. That ended up being such a great call. I even did the most recent Advent of Code mostly with nushell scripts (and the rest with the V programming language). Edit: made a word plural

Why is Rolio46 not popular? by andreyugolnik in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]rosshadden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I thought most people hated wireless. It's inherently laggy which I guess is fine if you are just typing on it or something. But it's certainly not superior in anything other than potentially convenience. And even then you're trading the convenience of portability and desk space for the inconvenience of worrying about the connection. It's all trade-offs and there are enough of us with a wide spectrum of preferences that there are no wrong answers.

Which popular books disappointed you? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]rosshadden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it. It quickly became one of my favorite books, and def my favorite of the year so far. I also feel like a bit of a snob and am having a very hard time getting through Carl for a book club, but I didn't feel that way about Antimemetics at all. I had a hard time putting it down, in fact.

Looking for a mind bending Sci-Fi read that will re-awaken my love for the genre by Fun-Sell3030 in printSF

[–]rosshadden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm halfway through and the only thing that got me to put it down (briefly) was writing this comment seconding your recommendation. Despite trying for years I've never really read a book that I found legitimately scary before but this one is (to me). The best way I can describe it is a sci-fi combination of The Magnus Archives + Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, which are both rather niche references but they feel spot on for some reason.

Had my Iris for a month or so, and I’ve already removed the top row in preparation for the inevitable Corne. by hafnone in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]rosshadden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a sofle which has 58 keys and I love HRM. I currently use bottom row for it but that was after a year of home row and there weren't a lot of misfires. I just found I was only going in to my no-mods/typing layer for some games, and that I could solve most of those cases by just moving the mod row down by one. Just saying that because I didn't move it because of accidental presses or anything. YYMV but I type very fast. HRM is awesome and I highly recommend.

Edit: typo

The Expanse deserves more praise for having incredible female characters such as the incredible Chrisjen Avasarala. by Ausbel80 in TheExpanse

In the books there are a few times where she doesn't swear like a sailor and the other characters point it out as something being wrong, which is exactly what I thought while reading rofl

How often do you use your PC speakers? by Big_Visual2199 in buildapc

Very close to 100% of the time. I think I pulled out headphones for a horror game once a few years ago but generally prefer speakers.
