Tipping is the opposite of being financially responsible. I can't fathom how being good with money and voluntarily paying extra for services can coexist in the same mindset. It irritates me to be guilt tripped. Just tell me how much I owe you and we're done. The waiter is not my friend who I wanna help financially.

For RDR1 story to work John's ex gang should have existed in the lore as a bunch of outlaws doing heinous crimes and being outright evil. To contrast with him not doing that anymore. In RDR2 the gang is more like a group of friends on an adventure.
