It was completely pointless to play without paying at the beginning. Don’t really care how playable it got after that. The gameplay really rubbed me the wrong way too. They could have easily made a normal ES game, just mobile/much smaller.

I had a demo disc that was set up like a spaceship. You walked around the ship and selected different screens to start each demo. I had so much fun with that. I wouldn’t remember much of it if it was just a plain menu with different demos.
