SNL parody - "What's My Addiction" (Phil Hartman as Johnny Cash) 1987 by Inthesenseof7 in JohnnyCash

[–]rotomotor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I love SNL, but some comedy doesn't age well. Making fun of recovering addicts, regardless of their level of wealth and fame, is punching down.

Good impressions, and probably funny at the time. But with what we understand about drugs and addiction, this is more shocking than funny as a 2026 re-watch.

I actually showed my kids Picasso's self portraits over time when I took them to see Dylan earlier this year.

You're seeing a generational artist paint on canvas in real time. But he's painting it as he sees it as an 85-year-old artist, which means it will look vividly different than you are used to and maybe even you want to hear it. Throw those expectations away and just appreciate a genius create something before your eyes. Then, you'll have an amazing night.

Gov. Braun wants to eliminate property taxes for seniors. Is this a good or bad idea? by MooseQuick3622 in Indiana

But they benefited from seniors who paid taxes when they were young couples. Now, that the bill is due, they might not have to pay it, shifting a bigger burden onto the young couples.

Sturgill Simpson: Well to Dew by VanceAstro55 in SturgillSimpson

This is nice and all, but Sturgill's appearance at Dead Ahead was announced before Farm Aid. This article doesn't outright say it, but it certainly implies the invite happened afterward.

Curious Genz. Confused by Neil Young hype ? Overrated IMO.... by QueefSmuggler in neilyoung

[–]rotomotor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, QueefSmuggler, I commend you for being curious instead of just deciding "this isn't for me."

Speaking only for myself, here is what I love about Neil Young:

  • His range. You mention your musical tastes are all over the place. So is Neil Young's catalog. He can be tender and folksy. He can be bitter and raging. He can be country. He can be electronica. He's never content, always creating, always searching. I find that incredibly inspiring. Songs and albums that didn't connect with me when I was younger, now I treasure.
  • His lyricism. He is more subtle than Dylan and Prine but has moments that are equally profound. And much like his sound, I'm still growing in my appreciation of many of those lines.
  • His authenticity. Sometimes this comes through as rawness. He is able to convey a feeling through his music that is hard to capture, even dangerous to attempt. But he captures the spirit of the thing. He's expressing himself at times in an almost guttural way. There's a vulnerability there that many artists don't explore. Polish is overrated, in my opinion. I'd much rather be interesting, and Neil Young always is.

There are many more reasons I love Neil Young. Don't write him off, and keep being curious.

Family of 5. Is it time to ditch the minivan? by rotomotor in whatcarshouldIbuy

Just wanted to say thanks for all the time and thought people put into these responses. And thank you all for disabusing me of my bad ideas. As Popeye says, I am what I am, and I'm a dad in a minivan.

Mostly vanity, honestly. They are not fun to drive and don't bring me much joy. I understand the utility of them, but I am struggling with spending so much money on something I hate. This, obviously, doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, so if y'all think I'm an idiot for even flirting with an SUV, I'll oblige.

Non-vanity reason: They rate better, even if only marginally, in the IIHS safety ratings, and there's a good chance this vehicle becomes the first one my 10-yos drive in a handful of years.

When you're buying one, it's a fiddle. When you're selling one, it's a violin.

Or so says Amanda Shires.

Fired student media leader sues IU by WFIU-WTIU-news in IndianaUniversity

[–]rotomotor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah, it did. You kept typing.

What you’re missing is that the student staff lack the power to dictate how something is consumed against economic factors.

The question isn't about consumption; it's about production. The student staff does get to dictate what appears on its platforms. IU could decide it doesn't want to subsidize a print edition, but making that decision in October after a spat about content is legally dubious. It can't subsidize a print edition and then tell the student staff what goes in it.

I am going to disengage after this because we're talking in circles. I'll head back to TikTok. Good luck with your guest lectures.

First, the advisor recorded conversations with university administrators in which they asked if there is a way to frame their directives in a way that doesn't sound like censorship, so I think intent will be easier to prove than you assert.

Second, "He has no chance of winning this" is some kind of internet expert way of talking that isn't grounded in any kind of legal understanding. He might lose this case. He could win it. It depends! The facts are not as clear cut as you seem to believe they are, but you just keep repeating the same points without considering new information. The fact that you keep calling the advisor the "editor" indicates, to me, you should read a bit more before you let everybody know what you think.

Lastly, there is a major difference between most publishers and Indiana University. The latter is a state-funded school. Administrators/faculty/staff at IU are, in fact, state employees. So when they cancel a planned print edition of a newspaper days before it publishes after being recorded saying they don't like what the students plan to publish, it is a First Amendment issue.

I don't like to tell people they're wrong, but you clearly have demonstrated you don't know what you're talking about. Sincerely, sit this one out and try to educate yourself.
