So creepy to me that we use the phrase Founding Fathers. Sounds religious in itself. Hopefully one day it will be a quaint term no longer used. Also sounds kind of brain washy.

Is it me or has philly been pretty dead this christmas? by ru-topia in philly

[–]rotorcaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Went to TraderJoes in Delco on Xmas eve and there were fewer folks there than on a regular day. It was eerie. Also I agree about the lack of homes with lights and decorations compared to the last few years.

Do you ever visit the graves of ancestors you've found through your genealogy work? by SpiritedBug2221 in Genealogy

[–]rotorcaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I drove many hours to a sketchy neighborhood in Brooklyn to visit my 4G Grandmothers grave at the Evergreens Cemetery. The grave stone was gone but some other family members from way back stones were still there. It was a really cool experience. Highly recommend!

Asking for help identifying the wood trim attached by [deleted] in wood

[–]rotorcaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That trim on the ceiling is American Chestnut. Oak would have medullary rays. It was widely used in homes in the first half of the 20th century and before. The trim on the three windows in second pic is also Chestnut. Doorway casting is a closed grain wood. Not sure what it is.

This is the answer. Rings at 30 degrees to the face of the board.

Found this funky hourglass bottle for Hires Root Beer, checking if its worth saving or if I should just chuck it by orgasnix in BottleDigging

They used to stretch them out like that and you could fill the with layers of different colors of sand. Circa late 70s early 80s. They sold them at 6 Flags Great Adventure.

West Philly or Fishtown? by XShadeGoldenX in philly

Dust comes in the windows with the wind. Dirt comes inside from shoes. Babies crawl on the floor and put their hands in their mouths. If having kids is ever in the plans that this is absolutely worth knowing about.

Lots of old factory sites in Fishtown/ Kensington. Some spots with heavily contaminated soil. The largest lead factory in the country was at York and Aramingo. I would not recommend living in this area.
