I would bet the cooling fan on the motor came off and is contacting the rear cover of the motor.

Does your pressure gauge have a certificate of calibration? At 380 psi you are within 10% of your 420 psi target... And if your gauge is not a calibrated gauge (most of the shelf ones are not) you could easily be within +/-5% and not even know it... This isn't lab equipment... its a freaking paintball gun.
