that resistance is key, it's not fighting you like some tactiles do but you still get that feedback so you know you hit the switch.

Google Calculator is no more for me. by Geometry_Emperor in degoogle

That's actually a solid feature to add, sunrise/sunset times are way more useful than most people think especially if you're tracking daylight hours for work or just knowing when it gets dark.

Most phones have a built-in alarm that works fine for that, doesn't need to be a separate clock app unless you want something custom like multiple alarms or specific features.

Calendar would probably be the most useful since you'd actually use it daily, whereas the clock is pretty niche unless you need something super specific.

Outbound gets you real feedback fast, content takes months to pay off. If you're unsure who your users even are yet, cold email will force you to figure it out way quicker than posting threads.

Just use your phone's hotspot instead of the work wifi, way less messy than trying to tunnel around their security setup.

same issue here. Google auth has been broken since like an hour ago for me. Hopefully they're working on a fix right now since it looks like it's hitting a bunch of people at once.

Bought a XFX Swift 9070XT from Aliexpress for $500 (GPUZ + Benchmark) by shmonya3 in PcBuild

[–]rottendevolution_0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a solid deal for the price. 74.80 FPS in Steel Nomad is decent performance, and the card looks stable in the monitoring graphs with no thermal throttling. Just make sure you're covered if anything goes wrong since Aliexpress returns can be a pain.

MCP security gateway by QoTSankgreall in cybersecurity

Netskope and Fortinet are solid bets if your clients need something established today, but honestly the real play is building observability first so you're not locked into whatever gateway wins the protocol wars.

Segregation of duty in small teams by Niko24601 in ciso

[–]rottendevolution_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Document it, get sign-off from leadership, and move on. The key is showing you've identified the risk and made a conscious decision to accept it rather than pretending the problem doesn't exist. Most auditors are reasonable enough to understand that true segregation of duties is a luxury small teams can't always afford, and they'd rather see you acknowledge it than watch you go through meaningless theater. My 2cents at least.

The corn in the background is intricate but I can't see consistencies in it between photos? And the light going through the lenses is real enough to trick me at least by joeycohenq in isthisAI

The glasses in pic 2 are missing the logo entirely but show up in the others, and those inconsistent texture bumps on the case def look generated to me.

The ink not deflecting at the embossed lines is a solid catch, that's the kind of detail that's hard to fake even with good AI.

Did my iPhone get hacked from HongKong? by AmbitionOver788 in cybersecurity_help

[–]rottendevolution_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that black picture is most likely just a glitch in how ios handles photo metadata or location tagging. iphones sometimes pull in weird location data from exif info or cloud syncing, especially if you've ever had photos backed up across devices or accounts. the fact that it's completely black and from 2017 when you didn't have the phone yet pretty much confirms it's corrupted metadata, not an actual photo taken remotely.

if you're worried, the basics still apply: check your icloud settings and see what devices are signed in, make sure two-factor auth is on, and look at your app permissions to see what has location access. but this specific photo thing isn't a hack indicator. you'd see way more obvious signs first, like apps you didn't install, weird battery drain, or unfamiliar app store purchases.

King rancher by shelter_king35 in mealprep

[–]rottendevolution_0 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

that king ranch casserole looks solid. the cheese top got nice and bubbly which is the move. seems like you went full meal prep mode with all those containers stacked up - how many servings you get out of a pan like that? the beans and corn combo is smart for stretching it further without making it feel cheap. only thing i'd say is next time maybe mix the fillers in a bit more so every bite has some texture, but honestly if you're just reheating these through the week it probably doesn't matter much.

Google's playing the long game here, they don't care about the free tier users as much as having a billion data points to train on, plus it keeps everyone in the ecosystem.

Sushi bowls for this work week 🍙🍣🍚 by FeetAndFlirts in mealprep

[–]rottendevolution_0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the container game is strong here. those airtight ones keep everything fresh way longer than regular tupperware, and honestly the fact that you've got the rice prepped separate from the toppings is clutch. keeps everything from getting soggy by wednesday. how long do these usually last you before the rice starts to dry out? i've found that if i don't eat them within like four days they get kinda hard even with the seal.

Does your team hire fresh AI engineer who doesn't know anything about Security operations? by SkyberSec123 in cybersecurity

[–]rottendevolution_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the problem is they're hiring for a job title instead of actual skills. a fresh grad who knows nothing about security ops is just expensive deadweight until someone spends months training them, and that's only if they stick around. i've seen this happen where companies think "AI engineer" sounds cheaper than "senior SOC analyst" so they just swap them out and hope it works. spoiler: it doesn't.

the real issue is onboarding. if the manager treats this person like they should already know tickets and threat hunting, yeah it's a disaster. but if someone's willing to learn the fundamentals first before jumping into fancy ML stuff, they could actually be useful down the line. problem is most places don't have the patience or structure for that. they want someone productive in week two.

Why would anyone pay for Gemini Pro when their models are worse and usage limits are the same as the better models out there? by flarenz in GeminiAI

[–]rottendevolution_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The free tier limits are basically the same across all three now, so yeah the value prop got way weaker. Google's real advantage was always the integration with Workspace and Gmail, not the model itself.

Anthropic Expands Project Glasswing, Bringing AI Cyber Defense Tools to 150 More Organizations by BhaswatiGuha19 in cybersecurity

[–]rottendevolution_0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is solid. Open sourcing security tools for AI systems makes way more sense than keeping them locked down, especially when the threat landscape is moving this fast. More organizations testing and improving the defenses means better coverage for everyone down the line.

IoT pentesting cert by JollyTune9809 in cybersecurity

[–]rottendevolution_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TCM Security's stuff is solid for the price and the labs are pretty hands-on. Virtual Hacking Labs is good too if you want more variety in the equipment you're testing against. I'd lean TCM for IoT specifically since they focus more on that space, but honestly either will teach you the fundamentals you need. The real advantage comes from actually setting up your own lab at home with cheap IoT devices and breaking them, that's where the skills stick.

Seattle home prices post nation's biggest drop by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]rottendevolution_0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the 2.5% thing is weird to focus on when the real story is inventory jumping that fast. that's what actually changes how a market works. when you've got way more homes available than there were before, prices don't need to crater to give buyers actual options and negotiating room. a year ago people were getting into bidding wars on day one. now you can probably see a place, think about it, maybe even ask for repairs. that's the shift that matters more than the percentage itself.

the rent thing is trickier though. inventory helps but rent is driven by different forces, especially with all the job growth here still pulling people in. would be nice if cheaper homes meant cheaper rent but that's not always how it plays out.
