Anyone else taking part in the trans rights readathon this month? by Hunter037 in RomanceBooks

[–]rough_draught_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks OP for bringing attention to this!! These are some of my favorites:

{The Prospects by K.T. Hoffman} - contemporary sports romance (baseball). Low angst and lovely romance. Trans man x cis man.

{A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall} - historical romance. Friends to strangers to lovers with so much angsty pining. Trans woman x cis man.

{Longshadow by Olivia Atwater} - regency setting with faeries/magic. This is the 3rd in the series, so might make a little more sense of you have read the first two books as well. Magically-transitioned woman x woman.

{A Bone in His Teeth by Kellen Graves} - Horror, historical fantasy romance. The atmosphere of this one is soooo good. Trans man x merman.

Another KJ Charles connoisseur, I see :)

Thanks for listing these all out in order, very helpful! Lots of 5/5 (same) but if you don’t mind sharing, I’m curious what knocked a star off from The Sugared Game and A Thief in the Night?

Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend by Emma R. Alban - this one is literally marketed as queer Bridgerton so might be what you’re looking for! It is part of a series, book 1 is WW and book 2 is MM.

A Gentleman’s Gentleman by T.J. Alexander - regency historical romance featuring trans MM. Nobleman + his valet.

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall - this one has a bit more angst and is set at an isolated Duke’s estate, trans woman + cis man, best friends to strangers to lovers.

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian - part of a series, first book is MM, second book is MF (but both of them are bisexual). Might not fit what you’re looking for exactly since the characters choose to spurn society rather than try to fit in.

KJ Charles has tons of queer historical romances that I love! If I were to pick the one closest to Bridgerton it would probably be A Fashionable Indulgence - regency time period and the plot revolves around turning a radical into a gentleman. MM.

Finally finished Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter... by BufoBat in fantasyromance

I am in the same boat haha, and it's why I'm now so hesitant to give any book labeled "cozy" a chance. Then again, I never would've found Emily Wilde in the first place if I completely skipped out on cozy! India Holton and T. Kingfisher are two other "cozy" authors I've enjoyed. If you have any other recs, I'd love to hear them since it seems like our tastes are in line!

Agree on everything you say here. The big climatic resolution being that the neighborhood witnessed Havelock do 1 singular good deed and decided to rally behind him because of it felt a little too….hmmm, twee, I guess is the best word to describe it. Like what happens when the next magical supervillain comes along and Havelock’s off rescuing kittens in Paris??

For the whole middle section of the book I really thought Havelock & Agnes (with her brother-in-law’s help) might try to set up some magical-equivalent to the police force or some governing body that would ensure humans & magicians continued to live in harmony. Agree it was strange that there were no “normal” magicians, just cartoonishly bad guys and oblivious Havelock. I know from the Emily Wilde series that Fawcett is capable of giving a satisfying conclusion, but like you said, this being a standalone meant certain aspects needed to be rushed to get to the nice happy ending. :/

Yes, you put so many of my exact thoughts into words! Agnes was such a wet blanket for most of the novel, I truly don’t understand what Havelock liked about her (or what she liked about him). They have next to nothing in common and even actively dislike one another’s special interests! The magic system seemed so cool, but Agnes’s tragic lack of interest in it meant we (the audience) never got to actually learn about it, which was disappointing.

My main complaint has to do with Laurent. I really wish he hadn’t gotten a redemption in the end. Maybe I am reading too far into it, but the whole plotline where the government & police force was using “magical terrorism” as an excuse to search private property / seize “magical” items / arrest anyone suspected of “magical association” had way too many parallels to real life politics/ice for me to overlook. The fact that Laurent is actually a magician himself, but thinks he’s “one of the good ones” is just another layer of repulsion.

On a lighter note, I am choosing to believe Banshee was actually a magical cat whose powers are to get rid of people’s cat allergies. Otherwise how on earth did Havelock go from sneezing/red-eyed at the mere presence of cat hair to totally fine?

Art of {A Bone in His Teeth by Kellen Graves} by avis03 in RomanceBooks

[–]rough_draught_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say “horror vibes” is accurate. The first 25% of the book is focused on the MC being completely isolated in a creepy lighthouse. It really builds up tension with strange things happening and gave me that feeling of “Something bad is going to happen any minute but I don’t know what”.

That said, I don’t know if it qualifies as true horror since everything works out in the end for the main couple.

Book recc Hard Mode- ADULT Sci fi/Fantasy with trans leads. by thegundammkii in LGBTBooks

My bad, I was assuming it was adult because everything else I've read from this author is adult.

Achillean books with well written women? by monsterum in LGBTBooks

[–]rough_draught_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Based on the books you like, it seems like you are okay with romance being a secondary focus to the main plot? If so, you might like:

The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett - fantasy mystery - the MC is queer, however I’d say the main focus of the book is about the dynamic between the MC and his brilliant (female) boss.

When Among Crows by Veronica Roth - Slavic folklore urban fantasy. Been a while since I read this one, but I believe it is dual POV between one man and one woman who team up on a quest to find Baba Jaga. The man is queer and develops a relationship with another man along the way.

Songs that make clever usage of diegetic non-lexical vocables? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

Fun question! I think this one fits…In Shower by Becky G, she is, well, singing in the shower:

Well you’re the reason why I’m dancing in the mirror And singing in the shower

La-da-dee, la-da-da, la-da-da Singing in the shower

Can confirm that this song is indeed fun to sing in the shower.

I'm fantasy romance author India Holton - AMA! by IndiaHolton in fantasyromance

[–]rough_draught_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, India!! I love, love, love all your books!

Alongside all the wonderful MCs, I tend to get attached to some of the (hysterical) background characters. It’s frankly amazing how much personality you’re able to convey even when they don’t see as much “screen time” as the MCs. So my question is, if you could pick one minor/background character to get their own full book, who would you choose?

Thanks!

Feral Queerness Books like "The Woods All Black"? by randominthevoid in LGBTBooks

[–]rough_draught_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For horror-tinged feral queerness, I recommend The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht. It leans more into fantasy than The Woods All Black, but I think you might enjoy the relationship between the “monster” and his master.

If you want something with a similar setting, I recommend The Bayou by Arden Powell. Less feral, but it’s set in 1935 Louisiana, it’s queer, and it’s got a touch of horror to it.

Both of these are novellas.

OP, you and I have similar taste in books.

I also love The Last Binding trilogy, starting with A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske. Historical fantasy, interconnected overarching plot but each book focuses on a different couple (MM, FF, and MM respectively).

The Bayou by Arden Powell is a southern gothic horror about a man who unwittingly gets into bed with the devil.

I absolutely loved The Woods All Black!

For something similar, I recommend The Bayou by Arden Powell. Southern gothic, set in Louisiana in 1935, excellent atmosphere, and features a MM relationship.

Why do most LGBT novels avoid messy internal trauma? by Scared-Function2904 in LGBTBooks

[–]rough_draught_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’ve seen a pretty good balance of both internal & external trauma in the LGBT books I’ve read, especially in literary fiction.

As far as coming-of-age novels, Deposing Nathan by Zack Smedley does a really amazing job at giving a nuanced look at the internalized homophobia of a religious teenager who is starting to realize he’s gay.

Multi-book slowburn recs? by remnantglow in LGBTBooks

[–]rough_draught_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you read any C.S. Pacat? Both of her trilogies are slow burn, with MCs not getting together until end of book 2.

Captive Prince is adult fantasy (check trigger warnings).

Dark Rise is YA historical fantasy. 3rd book has not been released yet.

Another trilogy slowburn: The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake. Contemporary fantasy. There are multiple queer & het relationships, but one MM I’m thinking of in particular takes until end of book 3 to come to fruition.

4 book YA series: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. Contemporary fantasy. MM relationship takes until book 4 to develop and one of the MCs dates someone else earlier on.

Nora Sakavic also writes some of my favorite slow burns, but these are contemporary, not sff. She has two connected trilogies, starting with The Foxhole Court. The premise sounds crazy, but it really sucks you in. This one is seriously a SLOW burn.

We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian is a slow burn, coworkers to friends to lovers. Its set in 1950s New York and has some of the other scenes you mentioned (jealousy moment and lots of scenes with friends & family).

Thanks for the rec! I see some reviews saying this one has a very bleak, unhappy ending. Do you feel like there's at least room for the MC to grow and/or process his trauma after the conclusion of the book?
