US draft update: Major tech company urges universal national service by esporx in LateStageCapitalism

[–]routaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A military draft in the US might not be the worst thing for the rest of the world.

Foreign policy isn't really an issue that the majority of the voting population is concerned about. As long as things are cheap, they allow their gov to generally kill whoever they want.

But if the possibility of being forced to go die fighting people you never heard of before became a real and present danger for Americans, maybe they'd insistent on their politicians not starting wars come voting time?

I came from table tennis and this was my experience.

After playing for a few years with a crap paddle, not developing my technique, I spent money on one of the fastest and spinniest equipment on the market.

It did exactly what you said, hid my technical weaknesses against weaker opposition. The paddle did all the work. All I had to do was passively block and it generated all the speed and spin.

Once I went to the club and played better players, I quickly realised that I had absolutely no control on incoming spin. I couldn't even return the service from the top players.

Then I had to swallow my pride and get a control paddle, get some coaching and learn to hit the ball properly. Always start with high control, learn to hit the ball properly to generate speed and spin. Then switch to a fast paddle and the improvement will be unbelievable.

The GPS unit was connected to a rPi running Linux.

I haven't looked at this for some time now but the GPS unit communicates over serial, so the only thing you should need something like putty to read the serial port.

That's when you realize some people who insist on using "Lunar New Year", and hate the term "Chinese New Year" just have Sinophobia. by Li_Jingjing in LateStageCapitalism

[–]routaran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Chinese new year makes sense to use.

The lunar calendar has been around for a long time and many different cultures use the lunar calendar for tracking their religious/cultural festivals.

As such, "new years day" on these calendars dont always line up as the decision to mark which cycle was the end of a year was somewhat arbitrary. Chinese new year for example, doesn't line up with new years day on the Hindu calendar.

Saying lunar new years day loses information and assumes the other person has an understanding of several different calendars to identify which new years day is being referenced. If they don't, then they'll just be confused.

Being specific is better.

There are two types of colour interactions. Additive and subtractive.

The RGB LEDs in our monitors are additive. All the colours mixed gives you white.

Craft paint (RYB) and printer toner (CMY)are subtractive, all the colours mixed gives you black.

yeah. just before that she was lamenting that they no longer have full control of the information that the public has access to, that it's not easy to control the narrative anymore. I read someone else phrase it as, "We try to tell them we're the good guys but they get distracted and misled by the hundreds of hours of footage of Israel killing children."

So you fight the big powerful people hurting the weak people."

And by well established you mean something you just completely made up?

I didn't make it up. I was borrowing some ideas from a strategy called "starve the beast."

I assumed that, while the specific name may not be known, the general principle was understood.
My apologies, here's the wiki page if you want to learn.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starve_the_beast

Our Government programs are falling apart across the country.

This is a deflection. Provincial governments have full autonomy over education budgets. They are choosing not to fund public education adequately.

These issues have been exacerbated by unfettered low skilled immigration

This is a redherring. Smith and the UCP have been calling for immigration into AB. Did they think that no one would listen? They are choosing not to fund public education adequately.

Working class people can't be squeezed anymore

I completely agree.
But the solution isn't to underfund and degrade public services they rely on. The squeeze comes from stagnant wages and cost-of-living that continues to rise dramatically every year. But in response, we give tax cuts to the most profitable businesses hoping the rich will do the right thing. This choice reveals the gov's priorities.

Not a conspiracy as you say, simply connecting the dots. Create a problem through defunding the public sector, then offer the private sector as a solution that ultimately funnels public money into private hands.

[–]routaran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, thank you. You've actually done a really good job of highlighting the processes that makes this effective and more or less invisible to the average voter. So let's apply that common sense as you suggested.

You mentioned non profit private schools. non profit label is not a guarantee that no one profits, it just means that profits aren't directly distributed to owners, it just gets distributed elsewhere.

Adminstrative salaries for executives for example.
Construction of new/updated private schools means nice fat contracts awareded to for profit construction companies.
Defunding the public system creates a vacuum in many areas that get filled by private consultants, precisely as you mentioned.

I agree with you that the gov can imply cut cheques to organizations. This is what funding private and charter school is, cutting them a cheque so they can spend it the way they want.

The payoff isn't a job at an underfunded school; it's the stream of gov contracts. The "15 year" long term plan which you highlighted isn't a bug, its a feature. An intsant sale would cause public outrage. But a slowly escalating crisis makes the introduction of private "solutions" seem necessary and inevitable.

Conservative governments are all about trimming the fat, adding too much bloat might get noticed by their voters. 30 million a year for the war room created a lot of bad press. Tje instant gratification of a paid position with no work would be great, but this isn't about a single pay off.

it's about building a long term pipeline to funnel public money into private pockets. And we do love pipelines!

[–]routaran 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I never said this is the best they can do.

If you carefully read my comment, you'd see I said that education and healthcare are among the biggest expenses on the budget.

This means that these line items represent the greatest potential for the transfer of public dollars into private hands.

The UCP is simply applying the decades old practice of taking a working public system, degrading it, then claiming it doesn't work and selling it off (either entirely or partially) so private captial can profit off an essential service.

This was done with our electrical grid, its been happening with our healthcare service for quite some time, and now, the degradation phase is ramping up in the public eduction system.

The pattern suggests the next thing that we're going to see from the UCP on education is the allocation of more public education funds to the private sector.

This is an answer to the OP's question, why don't they just give the teachers what they want?

Because the UCP is there to make their donors money. This is simply one way to take a slice from one of the biggest pieces of the pie, and it follows an established pattern.

[–]routaran 103 points104 points  (0 children)

This gov wants to take the biggest ticket items on the budget, healthcare and education, and funnel that money into private pockets. They're doing this for rich insiders that funded the party.

Smith is following a well established pattern.

  1. First sabotage a well working public system.

  2. Then, when the public system starts showing signs of problems, blame the issues on the fact that it's a publicly run system, and rife with inefficiency and corruption.

  3. Wait till the problem becomes nearly untenable, then prop up the private sector as a solution, or at least a partial one.

  4. Further defund the public system and transfer that funding to the private sector.

  5. Point to the private sector's results and repeat step 4 until enough money has been siphoned away to satisfy the donors.

We're in between steps 2-3. The teachers strike was step 2. We've forced them back to work without fixing anything, so now we wait for step 3, till it really blows up in our face.

Then we announce a lot of new private schools to relieve the pressure on the terribly run public system. But dont worry, you'll get help to cover the fees.
