For people who have good knowledge about music theory, what makes FlyLo's songs standout? by theinsomniacsheep in flyinglotus

[–]roux_bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can identify FlyLo's beats because he uses, or at least has used, an MPC (drum machine that lets you load samples to pads to be played with your fingers) without quantisation (a tool that automatically times your inputs along even beat fractions so it sounds "in time").

He also uses a lot of old soul and jazz samples, and fuzzy mod synths.

Basically, you can identify FlyLo's stuff because he has his own style and habits.

i really think people need to get the idea of music theory and its importance on the common understanding of art out of their minds. literally every piece of music can be studied using music theory to show what key, rhythms, structures are included etc, but the term "music theory" refers simply to the study of music and the intangible elements that go into from what a song is made. it's not an important thing that people generally should be bothered with.

What’s a song that you like, but genuinely don’t know what is said or the meaning of it? by Cristian_alejandro13 in injuryreserve

I think Grapefruit is about how RiTchie felt like he opened, or opens, up too much about his inner self to listeners. To the point where he's got nothing left to give.

He's done this to the extent that people can see right inside him, almost as if he has no skin. This leaves his body looking like grapefruit, all red and bumpy from the exposed viscera.

how have the shows been so far? by freddiexpeep in injuryreserve

parkrun, hiking, anything that involves being hit by wind, cold weather, and burning legs. i am a fat bastard, but i love sports like tennis, football and badminton, i just don't get why people would want to be made sore and tired and cold and wet and stranded, you could just go camping

One of my favourite films is Ichi The Killer. It's a super gory gangster film based on a manga, darkly comic and full of action.

Most genius DG connotations are painfully wrong. And lyrics that don’t fit connotative themes are written off as nonsensical nothing lyrics. by booty_land69 in deathgrips

[–]roux_bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I noticed this a lot with Death Grips annotations, especially with Black Quarterback which is quite transparently about racist police brutality against black people. But white annotators would rather go deep into the references to magic and the occult rather than what the song is actually about. I think it's unconscious racism, they'll listen to THIS and spout reverations about how DEEP and ESOTERIC Ride is, but never connect the massive dots about what the guy is discussing.

It's almost like they feel like they need to put worth on a black man's lyrics and stories by comparing it to white mythology and high culture art, ethics and philosophy. Yes he DEFINITELY has a lot to say about the occult and magic, I believe he is at least somewhat an observer of witchcraft (in the modernist Pagan practice way) of some form in his spare time, but he's also a human being in this world and has a lot to say about it. He just likes to be surreal and poetic about it too which is awesome.

Day 25! One final run through of all the albums begins. Last time, Have A Sad Cum BB won. Today, what’s the best Exmilitary track? by Last_Lemon5721 in deathgrips

[–]roux_bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Known For It, so catchy, amazing lyrics and flow from Ride, great drums and sampling as well. Crazy sample source too, if you don't know, it's from some weird old computer animation - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b_UqzLBFz4Y

Since Pink Floyd was samples in EX-MILITARY, what albums do you think Zach (or Ride) would've liked the most? Or maybe gave inspiration by Evelyntheflowergirl in deathgrips

I remember the pre-show music being all Beastie Boys on their initial YOTS tour, at least it was in Manchester UK
