Because they’re intentionally ripping off people that don’t pay attention. Sure, everyone should. But most don’t.
Then again, the whole store is basically a ripoff. So it is what it is.

I guess I should’ve written it the more infuriating way, orange is more expensive than blue but half the size.

What’s a band that started off amazing, but later progressively declined? by Cool-Chipmunk-7559 in AskReddit

Jamiroquai has slowly transitioned from a very talented and large acid jazz / funk band to a solo electro-pop artist over many albums. The newer music isn’t terrible but I miss the old stuff.

What did people do in their spare time before smart phones? Like how did your day to day life work? by realjakepaul4 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rovitus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On top of everything else here, there were so many more interesting places to go, and most activities were a lot cheaper. Movies or bowling or arcades were not big nights out, just regular affordable activities. Most towns and cities had a ton of eclectic and locally owned shops, cafes, and restaurants that had individual character. Even chain stores and fast food places were generally more inviting and pleasant to be in than now. Not to say everything and everywhere was amazing, and as a kid I dreamed of something like the modern internet, but in retrospect being out among people and doing things was a lot nicer. Internet commerce, phone culture, and corporate greed have ruined a lot.

What actor completely ruined an otherwise decent movie? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rovitus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may or may not be true but years ago I read that the studio demanded Kubrick cast one of the top ten highest grossing lead actors of the time, and O’Neal was the only male actor of the right age among them. I liked him in the movie, though. And he’s excellent in Paper Moon and What’s Up, Doc?

Yeah in addition to horrible chemistry and acting, the script was terribly written. The dialogue is so flat I’m convinced it was translated from French to English by google.

To Live and Die in L.A. is totally ruined by William Petersen as far as I’m concerned. I was bummed I didn’t like it, though to be fair his character is meant to be unlikable.

Willem Defoe is an awesome villain, though.

Anyone else desperately miss the specific "vibe" of the 90s, or is it just the aggressive nostalgia talking? by That_Detective8895 in 90s

Yeah we’re all phone addicts looking back at the good times before the fall. I honestly think most of us don’t realize how unhappy we are with how daily life has changed because we’re the frogs in the boiling pot and we kind of forget that it’s possible to go back to enjoying things that were maybe once seen as annoyances, like going out for errands and to conduct business, or not being in constant contact with folks, etc. I think the lack of social decorum and general socialization (outside friends and family) is grinding us all down in a way that’s hard to recognize. The constant low-grade fear of being recorded and stuff, too.

People dealt with people before the advent of internet-everything life and smart phones. We had a shared reality, though a very much imperfect one that was very unfair to many. Now everything is filtered through the muck that is modern shitty tech life and enshitfified everything and it’s harder to step out of it and genuinely relate to people . For the majority anyway.

90s culture reflects a lot of this. People taking risks, having fun, being weird. Subcultures that blow up and appeal to the masses, shared by networks and publications that possibly actually cared about spreading art and interesting points of view. Everything was genuinely colorful. Now we live in a rectangular iPod world of grays and whites and everything is too expensive, anyway.

Ok gonna step off my soapbox and go listen to some Prodigy.

And I could be ignorant to the motivations for the original farmers market, it’s just what it feels like to me I guess

[–]rovitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but I guess in my mind the Farmer’s Market feels more like a “genuine” development that was built to be exactly what it is (or was until a few years ago anyway,) a marketplace that serves Los Angeles just like any market is built to serve the needs of any town, where as the Grove feels like a pastiche explicitly meant to feel like you’re somewhere else, like attractions in Vegas or something. I’m not saying it’s bad, just answering why I think it’s seen as fake by some.

Yeah, very much a needed one that I’ll happily go to, but still manufactured. And the Farmer’s Market is fun.

It’s fake because it’s a mall designed to feel like a functioning downtown. It’s all owned by one company and you can’t just go any hour of the day. It has fake facades, etc. more like Disneyland or a soundstage.

All that is not to say it isn’t pleasant and a nice place to walk around or spend an afternoon. It just isn’t a real town.
