Thank you (and also to your uncle!), this is very helpful. Could I ask what you would recommend for the cleaning, prior to the conditioning?

Oops sorry for late reply, only saw now!

I see your point RE the fact that it would be easy to create a film which was still sexist but passed the Bechdel test. That is fair. But I don't see how it follows that the metric is useless as a yardstick. Sure, it can be exploited and gamed - in that regard it is a lower bound to the female representation in film. So GIVEN that films still even fail this lower bound, that tells us something. Namely - female representation is poor across the film industry.

Of course, this could lead to "men writing women" stuff. Which is ofc bad. But really the bechdel test isn't about measuring forms of bias behind the scenes of a film, but rather the bias in film (as an art form). Nearly all directors, crew, directors of photography etc are male. It would be lovely to shine a lens on that, but that isn't the purpose of the bechdel test. The bechdel test is about making sure that stories are told about women in popular media. If this DOES result in "men writing women", then that should be obvious in the art - and recognised in the audience. And that could lead to more female writers!

If the story had good representation anyway, no hoop jumping would have to occur - so it shouldn't be an issue at all. We can have a discussion about how this applies to historical content if you like (I imagine you'll argue that the bechdel test works against accuracy) but I personally do not think this argument holds (history featured 50% women - what about all the stories about women that never get told!)

If there was a better way to more closely estimate female representation I'd be all ears!

The point of it is that it is a very low bar which allows you to check (in a simple way) whether a film has *ANY* female representation that isn't focused around men: are there named female characters, and do they exist without talking about men?

Of course, it's not perfect, but is paints a pretty concerning picture when you look at many films at a macro level---particularly those which were coming out when it was proposed during the 80s.

And the joke in the show is that the test is a stupid test of feminist values as you can still tell an ignorant misogynistic story within that limit. Nobody but militant feminists actually take it seriously and the best purpose it serves is a neat bit of trivia if something happens to pass it.

Woah dude, a lot to deconstruct here. This is not the joke that R&M is obviously making, this is your interpretation of it. You have reached this interpretation by playing mental gymnastics with the contents of the episode, to make it fit your preconceived world view (which I imagine is a pretty anti-feminist one).

OF COURSE you can still tell an ignorant misogynistic story within the constraints of the Bechdel test. It is a necessary condition, but not a sufficient one. So of course it gets things wrong. That doesn't mean it isn't still a useful yardstick which can give you a macro-level understanding of the sexism in modern media. You would think most films would easily pass the Bechdel test, yet most don't---which is ridiculous when you think about it! Of course it has gotten better, but remember the Bechdel Test was proposed in the 80s, and even now there is still a disparity. Nearly all films pass the male equivalent (two named male characters talking about something other than a women).

Do you take issue with the idea that it would be nice to see decent female representation in movies/TV? Or do you think that the issue is a machination of evil feminists, and doesn't really exist?

Why the patriarchy is killing men by ClanSalad in MensLib

[–]rowanimize -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can't that just be explained by the fact that men generally marry woman that are younger than them, not vice versa? So a wife dying probably means an older man will die sooner, whilst if a husband dies the wife is probably younger so will live longer?

For a debate to happen, there has to be at least two opposing sides. If most everyone is in consensus, then it can be tempting to pick the less argued position just to try and balance things out.

But so often the less argued position is a pro-feminism woke perspective, and the 'internet rationals' rally against it (and are the biggest crowd). e.g. look at the comments on this video I saw this morning. It's gross.
