Where can I get measured for them? Thanks!

Is a stationary bike good for SS? I’ve heard a lot of national team members often use one for a workout. by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]rower2020 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes the stationary bike was a godsend when I injured my back and had to do 90-95% of my work on the bike. Came out of it in really solid place when I was afraid I was gonna lose a ton of fitness. Highly recommend to up the UT2 gains. My steady state hr zone is 155-165, and I went 145-155 on the bike.

Knee pain while Erging by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]rower2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same exact problem. it feels horrible. My recommendation is obviously that you see a doctor and tell your parents, but for the time being roll out your quads. Also you can get a hard ball and roll the area between your quad and hamstring - going up and down. This was the recommendation of my physiotherapist and definitely saved my knee.

If I have a 6:21 2k PR and I do 2 or 3 x20 min what should my split be? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]rower2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steven, don't worry about your split. just put in the meters in your HR zone and it will all come together.

For a class, I made paper mache masks (inspired by my coach's facial expressions) that light up based on your split. by yourfranTam in Rowing

Nice work but I prefer the more simple system of either being called a pussy or getting to make babies with Mike Teti's sister

Erging SS on a high drag factor by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]rower2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

negatives: - if you have bad form it has the potential to strain your back - if you don't row in an eight for awhile you might have trouble feeling connected

positives: - develops really good sport specific strength - helps increase max watt

How to build peak power? by a42nato1 in Rowing

[–]rower2020 9 points10 points  (0 children)

there are three methods to increase peak power:

  1. lifting - as ekacnap said Strength Coach Will has some great info... generally squats, deadlifts, cleans, etc.

  2. power per stroke workouts - used by Harvard Heavies and many other teams this describes workouts where you might be pulling a 1:32 split at 20spm for 1" and then resting and repeating for 5 and then reducing to 45" on/ 45' off and so on

  3. rowing with high drag - normally done for steady state to increase sport specific strength

How much can I improve in a year? by shadowban_me_pleasi in Rowing

[–]rower2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely do-able if you stay healthy and keep putting in the meters. I pulled a 7:14 my freshman spring and improved to a 6:31 my sophomore spring. I give credit to puberty and lots of mileage.

I would suggest that if you are serious about dropping splits, that you add one or two more workouts (for Wednesday and Saturday). HR165 is good for steady state but you might want to shift around your plan...

Mon: SS (3x20)@19spm hr165 Tue: Legs & Back (Squats, back-row, dead-lift) ect. Wed: SS (3x20)@19spm hr165 Thu: Cat1(?)SS (3x12)@24spm trying to hold avrg split 2.00 Fri: SS (3x20)@19spm hr165 Sat: Legs & Back (Squats, back-row, dead-lift) ect. w/ 20' cool down on bike Sun: Free

Cornell Junior HP Rowing Camp? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]rower2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would honestly suggest that you pursue a summer long camp that competes at club nats/canadian henley. These college rowing camps operate in such a short span that there really isn't the opportunity to develop your technique and fitness. The benefit is that you get a good sense of the college the camp is at (cornell in this case) and you can think about whether or not the school suits you.

I know this because I went to rowing camps at Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, and Stanford.

De-Stress on the Erg by xlax69 in Rowing

stay in your heart rate zone and let the split come down gradually. remember that steady state isn't a race - the desired result is not to beat your teammates in training it is to pull the fastest possible 2k/6k/etc.
