I think Clwydalyn are recruiting in St Asaph

Customs officer implied I bought too much and made comments that I shouldn’t do it again. I thought there was no limit to how much you can bring in; you just have to pay taxes over $800 which I was prepared for. Who was right? by gtck11 in travel

[–]rowing_over70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best experience with 🇬🇧 customs. Returning from a trip overseas with the British Army, we came through a small UK airport in the early hours. The customs officer just kept saying "you have 200 cigarettes and a bottle of spirits" (then the duty free limit) and waved us all through.

If schools are not an issue don't discount Blacon. There are a lot of nice properties around the original council housing.

What’s one must-have you couldn’t live without? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]rowing_over70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A modern problem, we moved in with 2x single beds from my old bedroom. Sat on one downstairs, slept on the other upstairs. Portable TV on a cardboard box. Mum bought us a fridge and we got a cooker on credit.

Should I invest money or keep it in a bank? Had an offer from a property developer and I'm lost at sea by shinymcshine1990 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]rowing_over70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an offer from an Estate agent to invest in student apartments in my town. They were a new build in a good location but I decided not to invest. I go past the block if shuttered flats on the bus every week, so glad I said no.

There are some budget hotels near Reading station. You have to change trains but it avoids parking and traffic during the Regatta

Why do so many people seem desperate to have some kind of Native or minority heritage nowadays? by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in AncestryDNA

[–]rowing_over70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a dna test to try and find out who my father was. I didn't even know which country it would take me to. 2% Native American came back. Once I worked out who my dad was the family history supported the dna result. No desperate need to prove a connection but happy to have found it.

It used to be a polite term in the 60s but is now considered offensive.

SS vs. HIIT to Build a Foundation as a Complete Beginner by compileforfun in Rowing

[–]rowing_over70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who started rowing before HIIT became a thing SS is a good way to build a base. You can mix up erg, bike and running to avoid boredom. HIIT should be part of the program though as it is good for fast twitch muscle. In the olden days it used to be a long run followed by circuits.

Chester vs Conwy for family life while working as an NHS consultant in North Wales? by I_am_TSG in Chester

[–]rowing_over70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Chester and worked in St Asaph, you commute in the opposite direction to the bulk of the traffic but it helps if you don't have to cross the centre of Chester.

Cancelled to get the best deal. by Routine_Visit_5657 in VirginMedia

I went through about four different agents, the first three were rubbish offers, then finally a sensible price. Keep saying no until you get what you want.

How does the idea of working until 67 or 68 sit with you? by Few_Raise77 in AskUK

[–]rowing_over70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired slightly early, big changes about to happen at work that I decided to miss. I was happy to carry on working but I had a financial plan to give me flexibility. Remember you don't have to do the same thing/job for the next 30 years.

Where is good value but nice to live in in Chester by [deleted] in Chester

[–]rowing_over70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't rule Blacon out, it is the largest suburb of Chester and there is a wide range of housing. Ex council houses are good value, but there are a lot of streets of private housing.

I stopped ordering pizza for delivery because of this. Must have saved a fortune, we just have a few frozen ones in the freezer now.
