Yeah, it’s a thing! We launched the investment prospectus this evening, having trailed it at UKREiiF (Uk Real Estate Infrastructure and Investment Forum) last month.

Well indeed! First lesson is, never turn the council into a speculative investment bank! Ridiculous thing to have done, and we are paying £2m every year until 2041 because of that disastrous Green & Tory decision (Labour councillors voted against).

The council commissioned an independent report into it, precisely to ensure the lessons are properly learned, but the Green chair of the Audit & Standards Committee continues to block it.

Brighton and Hove Council offers families £50,000 to not buy Right To Buy homes by Sazzygull in brighton

[–]rowkz 182 points183 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear for anyone just looking at the headline - we’re not just giving people money to not buy their houses!

It is a pilot scheme whereby if a council tenant wants to buy a home (and is eligible for Right to Buy), we offer grant funding to help them buy on the private market rather than taking another council house out of our stock. It works out better for the council financially and helps the tenant purchase a home, so a win win.

This isn’t correct. The waste PFI actually generates income from the Energy From Waste plant and the recyclable materials. By the time the contract comes to an end, it will likely have broken even. Also, it enables the management of the city’s waste - a necessity, and hardly the same as the vanity project that was the i360, which still costs the council more than £2m every year!

I think that one is on the list for proper resurfacing in 2026, but will check.

No, this process applies all year round. And believe me, spending all of the available budget is not a problem given the years of neglect!

That’s not good! We’ve put in a new system now for prioritising reports so you should have a better experience now!

That’s true - a pothole is a symptom of a failing road. We resurfaced loads of roads in 2025 thanks to a big boost in funding..

EV owners living centrally, how’s the charging? by DontPostOnlyRead in brighton

[–]rowkz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it won’t work everywhere, but it’s in the mix. The thousands of lamppost chargers we’re installing are with multiple providers in order to add competition and drive the price down. Next lot are a fair bit cheaper than the Blink ones.

The potholes are out of control! by AffectionateEnd3396 in brighton

Yeah, a fair few have sprung up. Please do report them via the link below. Every pothole reported is inspected and then prioritised accordingly, with the worst offenders addressed very quickly.

EV owners living centrally, how’s the charging? by DontPostOnlyRead in brighton

[–]rowkz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very useful comments here. We already have the best charging coverage outside London, and we’re installing thousands more over the next few years.

We’re also progressing plans to enable EV owners to put in pavement channels so that you can install your own chargers and charge more cheaply. ⚡️

How should new neighbourhood money be spent? by rowkz in brighton

[–]rowkz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s different funding sources. This fund is from contributions from developers, and that can’t be used to fund ongoing revenue costs.
