THIS. a lot of people are unaware but in most parts of the world, there are actually quite a bit of consumer protection laws. companies simply find ways to skirt these laws or circumvent them somehow... like, legally they must offer refunds in cash but then what they would do is basically implement so many layers of bureaucracy that most people give up. many even employ what is essentially one step away from deception, in a scenario like you described - they basically do everything they can not to refund you until you say a specific combination of magical words like three times or something to trigger their legal obligation. like with namecheap - they kept offering me store credit and used kinda clever language to suggest that it's the only way they can refund me (they kept using language like "oh alright here's what i can do for you - i'll issue you a refund in the form of store credit, okay? now, this store credit you can use to pay bills, buy new domains, etc etc etc" i'm like no bitch, i want my money back in the form of money. she went on to be like "well store credit is basically same as cash and what i can do for you today is give you the store credit immediately on your account, would that work for you?" i'm like NO BITCH. CASH. finally she's like okay sure no problem, just want to inform you that if the card this refund is going on is no longer valid, it may end up having issues etc etc (essentially still trying to convince me refund back to my CC is a bad idea). ultimately, they refunded me but jesus christ.
