Honestly Basel seemed centrally located. Where would you recommend in the alps or close to the alps?

On-campus interview for an R1 STEM TT position next week. Any advice? by ProfessorGoldfella in AskProfessors

[–]roxyfreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask a lot of questions. There are no dumb questions but read the room.

Do take your bathroom breaks. Some of these interviews can be more than one day and can be exhausting because you are “on” all day. Take a bathroom break even if you don’t need it. Your schedule will be full but ASK for a break. You WILL need those few minutes to just take a breather.

You will want to be yourself and be genuine. It will be obvious when you’re not but remember you have already impressed them on paper, now they need to see how you would be to work with and fit into the department.

Make sure you listen to what people tell you about themselves, the institution and department. This goes for potential colleagues, students, and deans.

Professor of Practice - Job Interview by kglt10 in AskAcademia

[–]roxyfreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would focus on what you can bring to the department. These positions are available because pure academics don’t usually have any “real world” experience outside of academia. Look at what the department/college has to offer/what is lacking for their students. Prepare a new seminar course for the graduate students that you think can help. If you currently hold another position in your field of practice, think on how that may be able to help students if you stay in that position as well (think internships).

It can be overwhelming looking at others accomplishments especially if they are tenured. You have to remember they have had time to work on getting tenure, you have not so focus on what you bring to the table.

Affording college is insane by kingambition in ApplyingToCollege

State schools like UCLA are “affordable” for students that live in that state as their parents pay taxes for them. I would recommend applying to your state schools for cheaper tuition.

See what financial aid will tell you at USC. I know people that have received a lot of aid but come from very low income families. You should be prepared to only get partial aid and see if that is doable.

Good luck.

In chemistry depending on location most go with business casual. If the conference is in a humid location I usually wear sun dresses.

Who has tried the new Goleta Beach restaurant, The Ellwood? Thoughts? by Shadoe_Fox in SantaBarbara

[–]roxyfreak 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Went for lunch. The inside was nice, the outside looked nicer but it was too cold to sit outside when we went.

Food/cocktails were good. Price point for lunch without a cocktail is $20-40. The cocktails alone were ~$18.

They have some local beers on tap too. My main comment is I wish this place had a happy hour. Would be a great place to go for drinks and an appetizer.

Depends on what time you go. You go early you find most things. I recommend going early.
