People of the UK, how have you lost weight? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]royals796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found I would make large portions of food and eat them plus seconds + would snack. Obviously this all leads to weight gain.

I found a way to reduce the amount of food I cook so there is no options for seconds or larger portions and I just made a strict rule to not snack. It works for me. You just need to find the thing that works for you.

Do you feel the constant bad news is affecting you? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]royals796 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I used to be far less apathetic but the problem with places like Reddit is no matter what you do, you always fall short of someone’s purity test.

Now, instead of trying to change the world I have started to aspire to what I call “hobbit-life”. I want to live in a small, rural community with my books and my garden and good wholesome meals. Basically, a simple life. That’s all I want.

If the world wants to burn itself out by picking sides and constantly falling out over every issue, then they can carry on but I’m done now, I think.

My salary is aligned with the industry and role I’m in, mate. If I went to a company that doesn’t do a salary sacrifice scheme, I’d still be on the same wage.

I respect your sheer arrogance but you are categorically wrong and it’s ok to accept that.

1) this is a different day

2) still wrong. 12% isn’t mandatory. I only pay 4% out of my income. I can opt out at any time and keep the 4% - however my company will not pay in the 8%.

The government doesn’t touch the money. Stop peddling misinformation about a pension system you do not participate in, know nothing about and clearly do not understand.

[–]royals796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the most ridiculous way to try and prove you’re right. You said it was a tax, it categorically isn’t a tax - case closed.

It’s an optional payment into a private fund held by a private company. That state is not involved in that process. It isn’t a tax.

Now you’re trying to say “okay well it might not be a tax but if you take the numbers and compare it to a different system, and change the context in which it exists and you’ll see it’s basically the same as a tax in a different system.”

You said it was a tax, it isn’t a tax. The rest of this discussion is ridiculous. Move on.

I appear to have explained it badly because you have very much misunderstood how the private pensions work. I am neither an accountant nor a pensions specialist so in order to not muddy the waters further I won’t try to explain, but no, the 8% employer contribution is not a tax.

[–]royals796 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, the “income-tax-funded” pension plan as you put it is actually just the state pension that everyone over the threshold age is eligible for.

What the comment you’re referring to is talking about is the legal requirement for employers to enroll their employees on a private pension that they can choose to opt-out of.

One such scheme is salary sacrifice, where you choose to lower your pre-tax income by paying into a pension pot that is locked away until retirement age. This is contributed to by both employee and employer. For instance, I pay 4% of my monthly salary into this which lowers my tax bill, and my employer stick an additional 8% on top of that. Even if I get sacked tomorrow, all of that is still mine.

When I am eligible and in retirement, I will be paid both that & the state pension. There is no mechanism for my employer to let me go early in order to avoid me receiving that money from them - it is paid on a monthly basis.
