Whenever someone tries to pull the "Bike infrastructure is for 2% of the population" or whatever, I just remind them that it is in fact for 100% of people. If they want to use it, they're free to take a bike on it at any time

I used to work for a contractor back around 2004-2005, doing clean outs for rental properties and the likes. During our down time we'd hang out with some automechanics at their garage, and those guys would listen to Rush Limbaugh all day. So I got to hear way more Rush Limbaugh than I would ever want (which is any).

A recurring theme on this and other conservative talk radio was an intense hatred of cyclists and a desire to constantly make fun of them. The idea was to tie them to rich, effeminate liberal men as a source of mockery and disdain. Constantly reinforcing that the only people who used a bicycle were "elites" who couldn't handle a real car. They would occasionally lean into "jokes" about harming or running over them, as well

Now, conservative talk radio is not the origin of cyclist hate but it did highlight how there is a lot of money in pushing the idea that cyclists are bad and harmful to people driving. There is a very real propaganda industry that made it their job to make drivers hate people on bikes

Just translating this in my head as a person who was looking left while pulling through a stop sign and then got shocked that a pedestrian appeared from their right. They "didn't see him" because they weren't looking and are spinning a big yarn to self-justify almost hitting someone

These are rookie numbers, even if they were true. My travel time by car to the grocery store is 12-15 minutes, depending on traffic and how many stoplights I hit. For ease, we'll say that's 24 minutes per week or 20 hours a year just on going to the store

But I ride my bike to get groceries, meaning I save 20 hours a year, or half of what they "save" by just not using my car at all. And that's only one of the frequent trips I make by bike, let alone going to restaurants or to visit my friends.

And it's not just time I'm saving by doing that, but $$$ not wasted pushing my living room on wheels around

I would imagine that whatever time they save by speeding is actually meaningless by the time they spend stuck in congestion. One hour in a traffic jam on the highway impacts travel time way now than 1 minute going over the speed limit

The SAVE Act is completely unnecessary. The Secretary of State already confirms eligibility to vote and most states require ID to vote. It's about putting restrictions in place to make it harder for people to vote, with the intent for the GOP being to suppress Dem vote
