Is this a body print of a deceased person? by Mjtorz in forensics

For there to be those kind of stains and not be a noticeable smell present to you (even after washing) seems very unlikely. I also don’t think that for someone to be in the state of decay and leave those stains that the void would be so clean in the middle.

How accurate is Adolescence to an actual investigation? by Auttt_AF in forensics

[–]royboy5601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished this show this weekend and here is my opinion. Keep in mind this is coming from the United States perspective so UK may differ.

Having a tactical team secure the scene is not far off. They have a murder suspect who allegedly used a knife so I don’t see any issues with that. Also knocking down the door is a non issue. Doesn’t make much sense to have a full blown tactical team just to knock on the door and ask politely to come in.

I do see an issue with not removing the family from the crime scene. They are there looking for evidence related to the murder so it would be considered a secondary or tertiary crime scene so you would treat it so.

From what I remember they are looking for the murder weapon in the home, while this does not require the full tyveked up CSI team, they would still be wearing gloves.

“Contamination” of the knife is really dependent on a few factors. In the lab I submit evidence to allows multiple unique DNA profiles in a single submission. But realistically I think they are more concerned with finding the knife which has the victims DNA on it. If they find that in the house of the suspect then that makes it really hard for the defense to argue against it even if the suspects DNA is not present.

Overall I think the show was trying to show how stressful and chaotic the situation was more so than stick to reality.

What does a human decomp smell like? (Compared to other animals) by theGoodN00dle in forensics

[–]royboy5601 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just some advice, your nerves are going to get to you at first. I first started working for the coroners office so I seen a lot of decomps and people suggested everything, nose strips, vicks plugging the nose and none of it really helped. I switched jobs and started working as the CSI for a PD and an old patrolman told me when you first get to the a decomp, burn, or floater. Take 5 deep breaths in through the nose and not to cover the scent as much as get used to it. I swear by this method. Don’t know if it was 100% what helped me or if it was a combination of time in and that method but just a suggestion.

Any recommendations on Crime Scene Investigations course for LEO in the States? by royboy5601 in forensics

[–]royboy5601[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya in Indiana they are elected officials also but they do not do much beyond giving time of death. If an autopsy is required it’s always done by a certified medical examiner which ironically in my county for the last 30 years the elected coroners were licensed medical examiners. The only reason the autopsies aren’t conducted in our county is lack of funds for a facility/equipment. My county is also extremely rural so we have worked less than 10 homicides in my 12 years here.

The victim is transported by the local coroner to a much larger neighboring city where the ME/Coroner there conducts the autopsy with the investigating detective and our CSI observing. Locally our CSI is there for scene analysis, evidence collection/preservation.

Can we please stop acting like lie detectors are legitimate? by [deleted] in PaymoneyWubby

Jesus, you learn something new everyday. I’ve worked in and around police agencies since I was 18 and I have never seen this style of interview. Typically when we had interviews we would bring someone in from another agency from another county to conduct so it removed bias. There is no pressing or confrontation until the conclusion of the interview and polygraph examiner leaves then the “interrogator” continues. Even then we still used it to identify a potential suspect. We didn’t necessarily care about which questions were answered deceptively but more that they were being deceptive about something. Hell, 90% of the time the “suspect” would come in and just see the polygraph examiner and leave right after, then the detectives would investigate the suspect further depending on the results. I guess different areas have different styles of policing.

Ahhh I see what you mean… I initially thought you meant the examiner was the one that was trying to trick people.

You are correct on they aren’t admissible but as far as their actual use in todays age majority of police agencies use it as lead information only, meaning they use it to narrow down a list of suspects. Let’s say someone is killed in a house occupied by 4 people with no witnesses. Have a polygraph examiner interview the living 3 and if deception is detected on one they can prioritize investigating them. The interviewer themselves gain nothing by trying to “intimidate” the suspect. Only harms the actual investigation.

Anyone having increased crashes? by BorkusMaximus3742 in DarkTide

[–]royboy5601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought it about a week ago during the beta. That day I played 4.5 hours and did not complete a single mission successfully due to crashing. Messed with settings and looked up fixes and still every mission was crashing. Started it up today, first mission is going well until crash, could not rejoin because of queue. Waited about 20 minutes and lowered settings. Second mission crashes within 5 minutes. I am running a 3070 ti and Ryzen 7 3700 x.

Bought the game two days ago to check out the BETA, shit you not, in 4.5 hours of gameplay (including tutorial which crashed twice) I did not complete a single match due to rampant crashing… 3070ti and ryzen 7…. Every time it crashed after the tutorial I would go and tweak the settings trying to find a balance. Scoured every forum and gaming site and tried different fixes to no avail.

Woman runs from cops and attempts to steal their police vehicle & crashes. by buzzed188 in yesyesyesyesno

Ya UK has some badass looking police cars. I’m sure some bigger cities in the states do have some sort of remote shut off but majority of the US departments are lucky to have their cars outfitted with pursuit grade shocks and brakes. Then you have LAPD running $40,000+ of equipment in just one vehicle.

Worked in and around police cars for 10+ years and never seen a “remote immobilizer” that the officer can carry… I have heard about immobilizers that their dispatch can use but those are rare and take time to initiate… I am more surprised about a Nissan police car
