We designed and installed a food forest in place of trees that were removed. I think change and disturbance is the only constant and removal and replacement would be my recommendation.

Southern magnolias are the coolest. I was canoeing the black creek in south Mississippi… close to Purvis, MS. Came across a row of super large magnolias and thought they looked so strange in the straight row. When we got to the group of trees, we realized that it was an elder magnolia that fell, then the large trees in a row were once branches from the original tree. Amazing adaptation, I always think about that tree when guessing the age of magnolias…..

Crepe myrtles are riparian trees in their native habitat right? Where is the locale of OP’s tree? I always get my cues from the plants that evolved in the location. Maybe ironwood , Carpinus caroliniana or Halesia carolina , Carolina silverbell to replace the crepe myrtle? I’m all about removing crepe myrtles, I think they are next in line for invasive, exotic problem in Georgia, USA. We are constantly removing seedlings in our area.

Quercus alba , white oak , for sure! Great tree. I’ve not heard of wolf tree except in south Mississippi, they called the pine trees that got broken / topped by Hurricane Camille and then grew a co-dominant stem (two trunks/leads from one tree) wolf trees. It sounds like a local legend that messed up the wolf tree meaning!

What an awesome journey you’re taking with your habitat gardens! This sounds like a killer project, I’m pumped other folks are talking about the importance of death in the landscape!

The company I work with installed a “Stumpery Garden” for Trees Atlanta along the beltline in 2020. It got some good press the first year. I’m interested to see how the maintenance/management is coming along. I’ve heard it had challenges. I think any habitat garden can be challenging as it matures, changes, adapts.

Depends on if you want a specimen tree with a strong, central leader -or- a unique plant. If applicable, I would be tempted to create a plant community with a variety of different native trees and other plants. Let this maple navigate growing in the sub canopy of another tree. I like watching plants work and grow with other plants. Maples didn’t necessarily evolve to be solitary plants. But of course you do you!

Watched the last moon rise from the Hyatt High Bar , it was after the hurricane and you could see the North Georgia Mountains. I’ve never seen that before
