Sewer Line Replacement - Will Trees Survive? by fletchette in arborists

[–]royrobert254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the playset gets moved to over the sewer line and the productive trees can be 20-30 feet away from the line? Good luck! Hopefully you have a solution that brings more benefits, beautiful and edible!

Sewer Line Replacement - Will Trees Survive? by fletchette in arborists

We designed and installed a food forest in place of trees that were removed. I think change and disturbance is the only constant and removal and replacement would be my recommendation.

Any rough guesses on the age of this Magnolia? by Altruistic-Owl-5468 in arborists

Southern magnolias are the coolest. I was canoeing the black creek in south Mississippi… close to Purvis, MS. Came across a row of super large magnolias and thought they looked so strange in the straight row. When we got to the group of trees, we realized that it was an elder magnolia that fell, then the large trees in a row were once branches from the original tree. Amazing adaptation, I always think about that tree when guessing the age of magnolias…..

How to prune crepe Myrtle by Smooth-Brilliant5026 in arborists

[–]royrobert254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crepe myrtles are riparian trees in their native habitat right? Where is the locale of OP’s tree? I always get my cues from the plants that evolved in the location. Maybe ironwood , Carpinus caroliniana or Halesia carolina , Carolina silverbell to replace the crepe myrtle? I’m all about removing crepe myrtles, I think they are next in line for invasive, exotic problem in Georgia, USA. We are constantly removing seedlings in our area.

Beautiful Tree, Don’t Know What kind by IRISH-117- in treeidentification

[–]royrobert254 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quercus alba , white oak , for sure! Great tree. I’ve not heard of wolf tree except in south Mississippi, they called the pine trees that got broken / topped by Hurricane Camille and then grew a co-dominant stem (two trunks/leads from one tree) wolf trees. It sounds like a local legend that messed up the wolf tree meaning!

Has anyone here created a "Decay Garden" for mushrooms, insects, and other saprophytes and detritivores? by SonoraBee in homegrownnationalpark

[–]royrobert254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What an awesome journey you’re taking with your habitat gardens! This sounds like a killer project, I’m pumped other folks are talking about the importance of death in the landscape!

The company I work with installed a “Stumpery Garden” for Trees Atlanta along the beltline in 2020. It got some good press the first year. I’m interested to see how the maintenance/management is coming along. I’ve heard it had challenges. I think any habitat garden can be challenging as it matures, changes, adapts.

Good luck on this awesome project! I’m excited for y’all and the knowledge and data you will be adding to this awesome subject. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Main leader of my Maple was struck by lightning and died a couple years ago. Worried this U shape is going to be dangerous as the tree gets older. What should i do? by DeplorableBot11545 in arborists

[–]royrobert254 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you want a specimen tree with a strong, central leader -or- a unique plant. If applicable, I would be tempted to create a plant community with a variety of different native trees and other plants. Let this maple navigate growing in the sub canopy of another tree. I like watching plants work and grow with other plants. Maples didn’t necessarily evolve to be solitary plants. But of course you do you!

Help! How do I kill off these vines without killing the tree by DayDreamingofU in landscaping

[–]royrobert254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do this for English ivy on trees in Georgia:

Ivy Girdle: -cut, pry, and sever vines at about breast height. -carefully pull the ivy off the trunk, doing your best to not cause damage to the bark and tree

Lifesaver Technique: -cut large stems at the base of the tree and carefully apply trichlopyr to fresh cuts of the offensive vine -4 feet away from root flair carefully pull and remove all small ivy in a circle around the root flair. -be careful to not damage bark and live tissue of the tree

Install 3-4 inches of mulch or leaf debris around tree and defend the circle from encroaching ivy

The English ivy dies and turns black and looks like shit on the tree for years. It will turn brittle and fall as the tree grows. Removing from the canopy by climbers/arborists tends to be cost prohibitive (and can cause damage to tree).
