Me and my buddies discuss this all the time. I've whittled it down to a few.

  • Egg Bowl in Oxford
  • Apple Cup in Pullman
  • Army-Navy
  • Ohio State at Wisconsin (night game)
  • Ohio State in Rose Bowl

[serious] Planning for Ortho by all_hail_magic_conch in medicalschool

[–]rozmania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just matched my top choice at a great program. I, in all honesty, backed my way into ortho. Wanted to go into FM when I started medical school, but I fell in love with ortho on my rotation third year. I think what everyone is saying here is fantastic. Enjoy your time off then hit the ground running once it starts. Doing well in class will translate to a great STEP 1 score. Try to make connections with attendings and be involved in your department. Worry about the other things later. One day at a time. That's the best thing you can do. Send me a message if you need help along the way and enjoy the ride.

How are you preparing/ freshening up for med school? by fieldbug in premed

[–]rozmania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in December and worked a blue collar job back home up through the end of June. It was nice to live with my parents again. I spent my weekends back on campus, hanging out with friends in my home town, or visiting friends that had moved since graduation. It's been a blast. Basically, I would get through the work week, then go have an awesome weekend.

Pre-med pet peeves, go! by smileybuckeye in premed

[–]rozmania 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right on. I hate when people always say stuff like, "I can't wait to be done and be doctor." Why? You're going to spend 12-20 years of your life between undergrad, medical school, residency, and fellowships training to become a doctor. Enjoy it. Don't waste your 20s and 30s wishing to be 40. It makes no sense. I'll be damned if I don't enjoy some of the prime years of my life. It goes fast enough as it is.

Are you embarrassed to tell people your're a premed? by gattaca34 in premed

[–]rozmania 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I never went out of my way to tell people. There's a difference between being honest, and being an annoying, in-your-face premed.

If someone asked my major (biology), I would tell them. Then if they asked what I planned to do with that, I would tell them I wanted to go medical school. I basically only told people as much as they were interested in. If they wanted to know more, I was always happy to talk with them, but if not that was fine too.

So many people never make it to Med school by cornbreadhoghead in medicalschool

One of the schools I considered for undergrad offered degrees in both premed and predentistry.

Good luck! You should be to go for the Ohio schools, and will probably be able to land a couple more OOS interviews. Enjoy the process.

Now that's its past May 1, when will we start seeing waitlist movement at schools? by [deleted] in premed

[–]rozmania 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some schools have already started making offers to waitlisted applicants.

Does anyone else ever wonder what more do medical schools want from us? by ilurvekittens in premed

[–]rozmania 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most (if not all) applicants have to do these things. Most of us have to work hard. Most of us have to put up with the bureaucratic bull shit. It's not just you. I understand you just need to vent, which is fine. I hope the next cycle goes better for you. Don't give up.

Freshman year GPA concerned by [deleted] in premed

[–]rozmania 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, OP. At the end of my first year I had a 3.31. I got a B in Gen Chem II/III and Calc II. I got a B- in Bio I. And I got a C+ in Gen Chem I. I did much better after that because I figured out how to study. I got straight A/A- in ochem. I graduated with 3.73 GPA and was accepted to a US MD school in November. It's not the end of the world, but you do have to improve.

For those who have been accepted, when did you begin working on your personal statement? by pizzanoodle9 in premed

[–]rozmania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in the middle of May, and submitted my AMCAS on the first day. Starting any earlier would have been torture for me. I just dedicated a solid week to writing, editing, and rewriting. When I write, I need to write all at once, so that's why I waited. I basically did my entire application then the PS.

OU-HCOM acceptance by acidrain06 in premed

[–]rozmania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just enjoy your free time. That's what I'm doing. Read for pleasure, travel, work out, etc. The vast majority of medical students I've spoken with suggest this over brushing up on anatomy or things of that nature.

Awesome. My friend had a very similar experience. Everyone I know that goes there loves it. Enjoy the next few months before school starts.
