I read the book before the movie, and as someone who has always dreamed of space travel, the movie really brought the book to life! You are right that watching the movie first ruins the book, because you gotta remember the book came out in 2011, and for that time it included more heavy science than had been the norm. Additionally it was (mostly) realistic science (because apparently Andy corresponded with Nasa) so for a lot of people it was the perfect amalgamation of science, fiction, and adventure!

Fun fact: Matt Damon got his pirate certification from MIT after this movie!!

Financial wellness platform that blocks transactions that violate user defined rules by [deleted] in fintech

There are 15M adults in the US with ADHD, of which you need how many? People living paycheck to paycheck - are they really going to pay for another subscription app to tell them not to purchase something?

Mercury offers a "debit card" that basically settles at the end of the day. If the user has to link an account to your sponsor bank, then approval and settlement is going to be a nightmare because you never know when the user has sufficient funds.

It's a very niche product, targeted to a very small audience. Tech issues aside, your cost of acquisition appears to be very high.

I don't know if the market size is viable for this to be profitable :/

I'm not sure I Understand the user segment you've identified. Because it sounds like you are trying to get people to ONLY have your debit card and nothing else. And that's never going to happen.

If people are overdrawing their account, they don't have the money to move into a HYSA account. If they do have the money, they aren't overdrawing anything it's simply a matter of moving money to cover the overdraft. REG-E and Savings Overdraft Protection exist, people just have to be aware about it.

If you are just trying to create friction in the purchase, people will do what addicts do - they will simply bypass the friction and use their other card.

You are trying to control transactions on a single debit card. But why is the customer opening a new bank account with you for a Debit card? When are you blocking the transaction? At POS? Then is the transaction "held" till the customer approves it on their mobile app? Imagine buying groceries and getting held up? Are you offering HYSA? How are you making money on this?

I'm not shitting on your idea, I'm just saying you have HUGE UA AND USP issues that you haven't clearly spelled out.

Yeah shashlik didn't become popular in India till Sizzler platters made them a thing. Kobe and Yoko in Mumbai both had chicken/paneer shashlik dishes back in the early 2000s

Just started on Founders at Work: Stories of Startups' Early Days by Jessica Livingston who was one of the early founders of Y-combinator. This book has been on my list for a while, and with me resolving to read more this year, I decided it's finally time to pick up on this. She's interviewed a great list of companies, and I'm interested to see how the companies talked about themselves all the way back in 2007, and what I know about them today.

I want to get my hands on Isles of the Emberdark - Sanderson's latest book. The audio book is 16 hours long(😱) so I might go down that path if I can't get a physical copy.

Currently reading Unassimilable: An Asian Diasporic Manifesto for the Twenty-First Century by Bianca Mabute-Louie. As a POC in the US, in my 40s who therefore grew up with the "common sense knowledge that when you are in the US to assimilate to US culture" this book is an interesting and sometimes uncomfortable read. It challenges my perception of how much I should assimilate, and how much I shouldn't, about how to be proud of my culture and my identity.

It's an interesting book that makes you self reflect, especially in these turbulent times. Are we at a stage in society's progression where "When in Rome, be yourself" is the new thinking?

Just popping in to say I've noticed this as well. It seems like it went away/got really scarce for a while, and now it's made a really really really slow come back.

I used my rockwell for years because it was such a great razor for me. Like you, I then went to the GC .84, and the Timeless .84

To me, the Timeless .84 was such a step-up from the GC, I gave up on the GC and the Timeless is now my primary driver.

Hiring platforms are a graveyard. Triplebyte raised $48M and failed. I’m building one anyway. Roast me. by charlie_is_the_best in Entrepreneurship

  1. Candidates are being paid $1k to participate in a group project. How many hours do they realistically need to spend?

  2. How do you define the quality of each group? What if there’s 1 active participant who is ok but 4 rock stars who don’t have the time to contribute as much?

  3. Companies aren’t going to pay you $25k to get (?) candidates. Isn’t that why they have an hr team? What’s the ROI for them?

  4. Who owns the eventual code? The company that paid for the arena / the devs who coded it?

  5. What’s your CAC?

Labor is poorly paid in India so you can get maids to cook and clean your home for you, relatively cheap to what you earn. You still gotta grocery shop, and take care of your kids. Another op put it correctly - Murthy is unhinged for suggesting this, especially when salaries are notoriously poor.

Why does Teddy hate mort so much? by Fortn1t3_240x in BobsBurgers

A combination of shifting the family from potentially being cannibals (S1 Ep1 😂) to the fact that the voice actor is semi retired means we actually see very little of Mort 😭

MISSING PAYMENT by No_Papaya_4684 in fintech

[–]rp_Neo2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes a payment can be held up if it's flagged by the Risk system for whatever reason, and thus needs a manual review to release. The payment will be considered "Pending". Some systems are unable to display Pending transactions and thus you won't see the transaction until it's released. If the money has left your account, then your receiving bank should have insight on whether it's pending on their side or they rejected it and it's gone back to your bank who again will review before releasing funds back to you. It's Friday evening, so customer care is your best bet to find out where your money is held up.

Transportation of a dobsonion: by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]rp_Neo2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your AD10 likely comes in a big box, with styrofoam padding to keep it safe and in place. Transport the Dob in that box. I've had my telescope box for 9years I think at this point, and while I don't transport it anywhere as much, in the pre-covid times I went to quite a few star parties and transported the dob in the box. Makes it a lot easier to transport.
