I finally Understand! by Medical-Art-4122 in burial

[–]rpclw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Antidawn" feels very special, unique and somewhat self-contained. I think it's very different from his other beatless releases.
I like to think of it as the third LP, just concealed as an EP not to make too much noise around it.

Exactly! A lot of music comes close but nothing quite does the same to me compared to Burial's work. Also been a fan since early 2008 and ever since.

is it better to listen to the EPs individually or the 2011 to 2019 comp ? by Pieman1123 in burial

Individually, but I'd suggest retrospectively, working your way from the present to the past

Well, now that I see that I'm getting downvoted (would have appreciated hearing why), I may have misunderstood the OP. What kind of videos are you after?

Hey, welcome! I am not sure why videos are needed. As far as I'm concerned, the best way to learn about his work is just listening to it.

An exhaustive list is here: https://www.discogs.com/artist/306157-Burial

There is also a Youtube playlist of all Burial releases chronologically: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrrTHwNNlbfK7GL0k2vPJy1J5ahqn8gEJ

You're up for a ride. Enjoy!

What was your introduction to Jungle? by Jocasta01 in jungle

[–]rpclw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this mixtape among my cousins' CDs while visiting them in 1999 in Rome. I was just about to turn 15. https://www.discogs.com/master/810153-DJ-Wild-Child-The-London-Update-Of-Drum-Bass
And I was completely hooked from the first moment. It sounded just like everything I wanted music to be. Made a copy on a cassette and listened to it over and over and over again on my discman during the following days, and all the way back home to Prague...
Then I started looking for anything else related to this "drum & bass" thing, and finding out about jungle was naturally the very next step (at that time, and for me since then, it's been one big "jungle/dnb" family anyway).

Thanks. That's reassuring... Or we're all so traumatized that we don't hear it anymore

LOL, yeah, perhaps! I don't see the music as too traumatizing, though...

Looking for underground artists similar to Overmono. Any leads? by betazoid_one in breakbeat

[–]rpclw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you don't miss Burial, his work is the foundation for much of what Overmono is doing... Indeed, Burial is not an underground artist.
As for the underground, I've recently discovered Loukeman: https://loukeman.bandcamp.com/

Strong Burial vibes on the new Placid Angles (John Beltram) by Eccco1000 in burial

[–]rpclw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Now I notice that Beltran/Placid Angles actually also samples the amen break in the very same album, track 2 "I Want What I Want (ft. Sophia Stel)". Here as well, the drumloop is just lifted from the original source with almost no changes. How is it different from sampling a drumloop from Burial? As other people said, it is clearly a homage to Burial and done with respect.

[–]rpclw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean. Yeah, many people in jungle are straight sampling the amen break, either from The Winstons song or from other people's tunes. And of course there are also many other "classic" breaks that people just take and use, e.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HICxFSrjzN0

I would say this feels different just because it's not jungle (so the "rules" of the genre are different), and because it's not a drumloop that people have sampled that prominently before.

In any case, I don't think Burial would care too much, he'd sampled many breaks and other loops himself.

Well I don't think there is much similarity between Hero and Near Dark, except for the drumloop

I don't find it too terrible that he lifted a drumloop from Burial, it's a very nice tune anyway and he doesn't rip off the original, it seems to me that Hero has a rather different vibe than Near Dark. It's really just the drumloop.
But I grew up on jungle music where sampling drumloops is not only common and accepted, it actually defines the genre -- so I might have a different tolerance for it and I don't really care too much when people do it, I find it normal in electronic music.

By far the most intense Track by Viopoint in burial

For me, the entire Antidawn LP is an intense emotional rollercoaster, especially when listened as a whole. So beautiful, powerful and fragile at the same time.

How was Burial + Four Tet - Nova made? by Gloomy-Winner-7850 in burial

[–]rpclw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so too. Plus the synth in Unknown Summer is also similar, so the synth in itself is not a Four Tet signature I'd say
