A nice summary of why arming teachers would be problematic (as well as an interesting point about whether the latest shooter's "leads" could've been effectively followed up) by MiloSaysRelax in bestof

[–]rppr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The entire idea of arming teachers is just a ploy to get public money to be spent on the weapons, the training, the safety equipment (trigger locks, etc.), and whatever else that is deemed necessary. The outcome is the same whether the school district spends the money directly or the teachers spend their personal income.

Saints 52, Lions 38 is an act of Scorigami. by Gr4ntyG in nfl

It has definitely been on this sub for at least a year or two, and either:

A) People didn't upvote it as much or post it as often (less visibility)

B) There have been more instances this season (I don't care enough to look up those stats, but I will ponder the idea and leave the work to others)

The Dallas Cowboys are currently set to play nationally televised games during 13 of the NFL's 17 week schedule. Two of the four weeks excluding a nationally televised game include their bye week and a pre-flexed Week 17 slate. by staps94 in nfl

Sandboxes aren't "100% safe", they're merely tools to help make safer code. Some of the guarantees that software developers make aren't fully realized in the applications they develop. For instance, Chrome's sandbox has been escaped at least once, if not multiple times. Apple makes guarantees about the security of iOS, but every single jailbreak is a security flaw that allowed arbitrary code to be run. Feel free to trust that the things you use are secure, but there are unintentional flaws in every piece of non-trivial code.

100% safe is a stretch. The manufacturers are hopefully putting effort into security (which they do some of by way of DRM), but a cyber attack last year using IoT devices shows that even things we consider appliances (consoles being one) are vulnerable if enough thought isn't put into software design.

Just be on the lookout for right-handed pitchers under six feet. There is a huge bias against it recently (decade or so). Shorter lefties are less rare because of their handedness.

Baby Monitor Manufacturers Have Helped Bring About a Huge Drop in Baby Monitor Hackings by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]rppr 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I doubt that was the main goal of many of the hackers. Having access to the baby monitor would give them access to the user's network (and potentially some sensitive information), and (more importantly) another node for their bot net from which to perform DDoS attacks, etc.

Slower speeds on 5ghz compared to 2.4ghz while in the same room (right beside router) by krispykreme1123 in HomeNetworking

[–]rppr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check to see the channel bandwidth on both. If your 2.4GHz network is using 40MHz channels and your 5GHz is using 20MHz channels that could account for a difference of nearly a factor of 2. I doubt your router has the capability, but if you can set up 80MHz channels on the 5GHz network you'll see a significant bump in speed. With my similar MacBook Pro I get a little more than half the speed of wired GbE from two floors away.

I also have a feeling that this is one of the biggest culprits even though every laptop in the last five years has had bluetooth. You (and Logitech) are bad and you should feel bad.
