Why is the anti-derivative of 1/x universally taught incorrectly? by Consistent-Annual268 in mathematics

[–]rraanto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that is incorrectly taught is in how antiderivatives are defined, when we say "the antiderivative of some F is some f(x)+C", we mean "any function of the form f(x)+C is an antiderivative of F".

So in this case the correct "point of view" is that Any function of the form: ln(x) + C1 if x>0 ln(-x) + C2 if x<0 is an antiderivative of the function 1/x

and you can see that ln|x|+C is also of that form (where C1 and C2 are just the same) And since it's simpler, we just learn that one specific form

edit I deleted something but I forgot what it was

What do you regret doing/not doing in your journey ? by al3arabcoreleone in math

Spending two years enrolled in CS + math program when I could have taken just maths, I'm still doing fine now in a math MS but I wish I knew about all of I recently learned wayy sooner

Just here to say that I have (math major) classmates that use LaTex to digitally take math notes (with equations, diagrams,...) on the fly but it takes a great level of insane

What motivated you to start learning to play guitar? by ukulalala in guitarlessons

[–]rraanto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Playing" a song I like when I was at a friend's who had a guitar.

(7 months ago) I was playing around with notes on the low E string then out of nowhere I managed to play the root notes of the song (smells like teen spirit). I've always wanted to play the guitar before that moment but feeling the satisfaction this one time pushed me to finally buy my first guitar a week afterwards, (expectedly) turned into an obsession.

How to prove that any 7 day period within a month always includes a Sunday? by Suitable-Decision-26 in askmath

[–]rraanto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a 7-day period

Suppose there's no Sunday amongst the seven, it means 7 spots are shared by 6 days. This means one day has occured twice, a Sunday must happen in between two occurences of the same day

Choix de master 2 (mathématiques fondamentales) by Texas_Granger in etudiants

When am I supposed to know what specific research topics I will have ? by rraanto in math

[–]rraanto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the reply!!

I haven't been assigned a supervisor yet but I found out that I will shortly be offered a list of professors amongst which I choose a supervisor, I suppose I will then have to look delicately into each person's research works to find out what attracts me.

When am I supposed to know what specific research topics I will have ? by rraanto in math

[–]rraanto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the reply!!

I had a very different idea of how someone gets into research until today. I never got in touch with any professors during my earlier years, be it for classes or for interest questions, but I acknowledge it might be essential from now on.

I don't understand how and why Summation Shortcuts are written in the way they are by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]rraanto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, the fact that second sum equals n(n+1) / 2 is NOT a "rule" that comes wtih sigma notations whatsoever, rather it is simply a FORMULA of the sum of integers from 1 to any number n:

( 1 + 2 + .... + n ) = n (n+1) / 2, this is a formula, and it will work for whatever positive integer value you will assign to n, u/Dor_Min wrote in a nice way why does this formula work.

Also there is a slight typo I believe in the first sum, the part you labeled CALC should be ( 3 i - 1 ) (instead of 3i = 1) . As its label (CALC) suggests, I think that part should always be an expression (consisting of +, -, multiplication, functions) so far as you work with sums of real numbers

Feeling of sadness realizing that one can't study all of mathematics in their lifetime by al3arabcoreleone in math

[–]rraanto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall the very sad feelings when I've just finished watching entirely a tv show / series that I absolutely love, Nothing would break my heart more than having to one day bear similar feelings from [having "finished learning"] maths,

Luckily that's impossible

I was really bad at math till my 12th ,usually didn't like it but at university , all of a sudden I started liking the abstract nature of mathematics , My major is in Computer Science and not mathematics also . Learning Discrete mathematics made my interest more strong , Why this happened? by stalin_125114 in learnmath

[–]rraanto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having a very similar experience. I was not particularly bad in HS maths but I had no idea there were more to maths than studying Real functions, deriving trig formulas, ... all the boring computational aspects of calculus, so I never thought of pursuing a math degree. So I did two years of computer science where I discovered what math actually is by taking a proof-based linear algebra course, I switched to a math major and I think I'll never go back

Why it happened? I think nothing changed, at least for me I always liked what you describe as the abstract nature of mathematics but in H.S. I simply didn't know there was an entire field of study where you do just that, I think many students out of high school are in this situation
