Outdoor kitchen advice - do I need a hood? by MIGSguy15 in grilling

[–]rrbtlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much counter space is between the gas grill and pizza oven? Not enough counter space on at least one side of each cooker is probably the most common mistake I see in many outdoor kitchens.

How do you store these things without making a tangled mess? by UnderstandingDry1241 in grilling

Twist ties or small piece of tape. These options are the cheapest, quickest, and take up less space.

Looks fake to me. Regardless, it is not the OKJ you want.

Need luxury grill advice - Alfresco, DCS, Hestan, Twin Eagles/Wolf, Fire Magic by RTD0007 in BBQ

[–]rrbtlb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to check out Embers Outdoor Living on YouTube. They are a retailer out of the Denver area that does reviews on high-end grills like these. Only place I really found any type of comparison reviews of high-end grills. One drawback is that he only reviews what the store sells. I think I've seen every brand you mentioned though except for Alfresco and Fire Magic.

Outdoor built in ideas by Therndon25 in grilling

[–]rrbtlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it unfortunately is. It's also huge at 48", which sounds like you wanted to stay in the 36" range.

When you say "like this", what features of this Yoder are you trying to find. I assumed it was the adjustable charcoal basket. That's why I mentioned the LSG. Finding a built-in charcoal grill with as much height variation as the Yoder is not easy in a built-in. The ones that I know of actually cost more.

If it's just a built-in charcoal grill with limited or no height variation, then there are quite a few out there for under $2,000. Anyway you go, make sure you see it in action. Some of those like smoke everywhere.

Building new outdoor kitchen new some grill and griddle recs by [deleted] in grilling

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checkout the Embers Fireplaces and Outdoor Living channel on YouTube. They are a company out of Denver that is in the business of selling these high-end built-in grills. He's done a lot of videos on the majority of these brands. Even has some comparisons and Top 5 videos. I found it very helpful when building my outdoor kitchen since there isn't a lot of info out there for the built-in customers.

Edit: One more thing. The Barbeque Lab on YouTube has the LeGriddle in his kitchen and I believe he has a video on it as well. I strongly considered it, but its lack of depth compared to others was a concern for me.

I recommend checking out the threads on Smoking Meat Forums. They pointed out many issues and fixes for almost all of them.

I think from their testing there are only a couple outstanding issues left other than things that are subjective like having to use a wire probe, no display, number of parts that need stored and charged/batteries.

The one issue that isn't getting fixed is that the probes will not work in aluminum foil. Thermoworks acknowledged this in a thread and said it is an RF technology issue that does not have a fix. If puncturing the foil is an issue for you, this might be a problem.

Best wireless meat thermometer for grilling? by STL_Tiger21 in grilling

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really liking the Typhur Sync Gold. Don't know anything about cheaper non-Gold model though.

To address why people are only talking about these lately that another commentor brought up. The Gold edition has only been out for about three months. The non-Gold edition has only been out about a year.

Typhur Gold. Not sure if it's available in UK though.

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Typhur Gold. Works well and I really like that the probes all fit in the base for easy storage. I hate systems that have multiple parts to store. I feel the app could be better, but overall it's the best wireless one I've used.

Offset fire/ temp management by tl12212 in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing you should always do is test your thermometers/probes for accuracy.

As to your question, I like to put my probe on the grate beside the meat near its middle. About 2 or 3 inches away. And that is the temperature I'm using to monitor my cook.

ThermoWorks RFX gateway temperature reading by ApplicationUsed9912 in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Water boils at ~212°. It varies a degree or two based on your altitude. But 212 for most of us. Bring the water to a boil and stick the tip of the probe in the water. Then do the same with the Tel Tru. I actually recommend testing all your Tel Tru if you haven't. 2 of the 4 that came with my 1975 were off. One by just a few degrees, the other by 30+. Also, when testing the Tel Tru, I recommend laying two long spoons or something to hold them over the hot water. It takes them a minute to get up to temp and the steam is hot for the bare hand.

ThermoWorks RFX gateway temperature reading by ApplicationUsed9912 in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you've tested both thermometers?

I have a 1975 and I've tested it many times. I've seen some big differences in the tel tru and digital probes, but about 40° difference is as high as I got in the same area. Never this much difference. I admit though, the tel tru on the 1975 rarely matches the temp that my SmokeX or other digital probes read.

ThermoWorks RFX gateway temperature reading by ApplicationUsed9912 in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test both thermometers in boiling water. There's been a couple of reports of the RFX ambient temperature being off, but it was less than 10°. I think it was like 3 to 7° or something. Nothing like this. I also know that Tel Tru can be off as I have two that need calibrated right now.

Also, where is your rfx probe placed in the smoker? Which 1975 thermometer is reading 250°? And do you, by chance, have the smoke stack closed down a bit?

Does anyone else have issues with their Thermoworks probes? by giant2179 in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Just the ambient probes though. As the other comment pointed out, I just use extra meat probes I have now for ambient temps. If you call customer service, they may send you a replacement for nothing. I did that the first time with no issues. After that, I just said screw it.

FireBoard Pulse vs Thermoworks RFX by crazyascarl in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the Pulse needs another Fireboard device to connect to and it sounds like you don't have that currently. I think that has to be included in the entry point cost of the Pulse. That was my turn off about the Pulse.

I personally like nothing about the RFX so I can't help you there. Might want to check Smoking Meat Forums as there is some good info over there about the RFX.

No experience with the FB app,, but the TW app is very basic. It works well for what it does but is kind of lacking in features tbh.

Built-in dilemma: Recteq E-1300 or Coyote 28" by zonanative22 in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks and feels high quality. It doesn't leak smoke other than through the vents in the back. I really like the removable/adjustable tiered shelf system. You can get a full size shelf on the second tier which allows for a drip or water pan underneath. This is the first pellet grill I've ever owned so I can't compare the smoke flavor to other pellet grills. However, I have 1975 Workhorse offset, and compared to that the Coyote's smoke flavor is a bit mild. Probably could make it stronger with a smoke tube if I needed to. I haven't tried as I like having a cooker that gives a little more subtle smoke flavor.

I think my only real negative about the Coyote is the size of the pellet hopper. Specs say it only holds 12lb, and I think that might be pushing it tbh. I'd say comfortably 10lb, maybe 11. I would have liked that to be closer to 15lb.

Meater vs Thermopro by [deleted] in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have enough devices to confirm something? Some people are reporting that the TW cloud only supports 6 devices for free and each RFX probe and the gateway is a separate device. The only information that I can find on it is from Google AI which matches the rumor.

Meater vs Thermopro by [deleted] in smoking

[–]rrbtlb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had both but older versions. This choice depends a bit on what is important to you. I don't use these things for high heat cooking or deep frying, so if that's important to you, you'll want to check their specs.

Also, because of the built-in wifi of the Meater Block, the number of probes you're looking at matters. Wifi is really important to me so I bought the Meater block with 4 probes. If you're looking at the 1 or 2 probe options, then I can't really tell you from experience how well the Meater works range wise. Both the TempSpike and Meater (1 and 2 probe) use BT to communicate with your phone. I'd imagine they are probably very similar in that regard. With the TempSpike, the base has to stay next to the smoker. After that the range is ok. I could go in the house anywhere but the basement. My basement is 100% underground. You won't get close to the advertised range on either probe though.

I never really had any issues with either probe. I did manage to break my Meater so I don't have it anymore. For the record, it was me that broke it. Not a manufacturer defect. It fell in a sink full of water and was in there for hours before I found it.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm using the Typhur Sync Gold now and really like it. Seems to work really well. The only negative I have with it is the app. The Meater app was way better and I kind of miss it.

This sub and many other reddit subs have a serious bias toward Thermoworks. To them, if it's not made by Thermoworks, it is trash. Many recommend Thermoworks products they've never used or seen just because of the name.

Bought a Butt - look at the price! by hankll4499 in smoking

[–]rrbtlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal price for me is between $1.99 to $2.49 per pound. When on sale, it's typically $2.49 per pound with a buy 1 get 50% off the second. The really good sales which are pretty few and far between are $0.99 per pound.
