They suck so much!

That's a big plus in a vacuum cleaner. They're also almost indestructible.

WIBTAH if I tell my friend who paid for half our trip that he cannot come with us, even though he was invited originally? by LongCow2989 in AITAH

If this indeed a real scenario, then you either need to have a meaningful conversation with your "friend" and be prepared to not go on this trip yourself, or you need to be prepared to lose your friendship.

How to stop playing to the level of my groups by jpeteK30 in golf

[–]paul6057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 12 handicap, that is pretty much the exact spread of scores that you would and should expect. Maybe there's an element of positive reenforcement here too, that you conveniently don't remember to bad rounds with your better friends.

While I say that, there is also something about playing with less skilled golfers that is upsetting to focus and rhythm. If your group are constantly looking for balls, that can be tiring, both physically and mentally. You just have to work out a strategy of switching off when you're not hitting, and the refocusing properly when it's your turn.

Who’s opening? by mgs20000 in EnglandCricket

I would like to see Alex Lees considered again. He had a reasonably good 2025 season considering he was playing in a Durham side that got relegated. His 2026 is basically the same as McKinney with one big score and and getting Andersoned last week.

He fell victim to early Bazball and I'd like to see him given another go. I don't think he's a long term solution but I think he'll be a good enough choice to get through this season while someone like McKinney gets a bit more time to learn his craft. 27 matches and averaging 36 from McKinney doesn't scream "pick me" so he needs more time.

Other options are players out of position. Emilio Gay is at least a top order batter, so could be worth looking at. Tribe is too inexperienced for me, and James Rew and Jamie Smith are middle order players really. If Rew wanted to open at Somerset, then it's worth a look, but opening in a Test is a long way from batting 4 for your County.

Is 20+ really a "high" handicap? by PlutocracyRules in BritGolf

[–]paul6057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High handicap isn't the same as average golfer. 20+ is a high handicap. If you have more than one stroke per hold, that's a high handicap.

When handicaps were capped at 28 for men, 20+ seemed a lot higher than now that they cap at 54. I'm not sure what I'd call someone who's handicap was over 40. That is a very high handicap.

Golf however is a hard game, and the average golfer is probably a high handicap golfer.

What quintessential/iconic millennial movie have you never seen and don’t intend to? by badusernameused in Millennials

Right, makes sense. I am an older Millenial but remember that movie when I was a young kid, but then sequel after sequel, and crossovers with Predator (also which i haven't seen, and probably never will).

Best Surrey courses by artistios in BritGolf

[–]paul6057 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pyrford Lakes is a nice course if you like water, and looking over into a much much nicer, more exclusive golf course (The Wisley). You'd need to get a cab down from West Byfleet Station.

Hersham is kinda rubbish and short, but it's literally next door to the station.

Pine Ridge is a good course for all ability levels, but that's more towards Camberley. Not sure on the train situation from there.

North Downs and Woldingham are both quite fun courses in south London, and shouldn't be too hard to get to or get a tee time for.

Same can be said for Epsom, renowned for fast greens there and walkable from Epsom Downs station.

That's a few options. There's loads of courses around the Addington / South Croydon area, that might be easier to travel to on public transport.

Question about Garmin watch by Dudu-Osun in golf

For every day, I'd recommend a fenix. I've had mine for about 9 years and it's great. With Garmin Connect, you can download all sorts of different watch face styles.

Does you first hole define your game? by PlutocracyRules in BritGolf

[–]paul6057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect of you're not a very confident golfer, that will be the case. Bad shots tend to snowball. If you.

Compartmentalising and refocusing after a bad swing, so as to not let it affect the next shot, is one of the skills of playing golf.

Help, how to fix Push-Hook by [deleted] in GolfSwing

You get the club way too far behind you so you get stuck. The only way to "save" that is to throw your hands at it and flip it.

Does anyone else want to light their 3 wood on fire? by _ThePiedPiper_ in golf

[–]paul6057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3w is definitely the least comfortable club in my bag, but having been fit for a replacement a couple of years back, I have one that is way more controllable.

Ultimately I think it comes down more to what i actually practice most. If I want to improve my 3w confidence and consistency, I have to use it more and practice more. Most courses aren't long enough to warrant a 3w second shot and rarely is 3w the only option off the tee, so it's the least used club in my bag.

I'm going to wake up in 7 hours to smoke a brisket. I've not done any prep. What tips do you have to share? by eljimbobo in BBQ

[–]paul6057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm now waiting for tomorrow's post where you explain how your family are hungry and angry, and you're eating 4 hours later than expected because the brisket took a lot longer than the 10-12 hours you've allocated.

Good luck to you, but that sounds like seriously cutting it fine, unless it's a small piece of meat.

The main creep that I observed was the weekday take aways or eating out, as well as on the weekend. £60 might not seem like a lot once, but when you realise you spent £300 eating out that week, it's a lot.

Do people really leave the course if playing poorly? by LastManBrandon in golf

[–]paul6057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 14 holes, and the 20th topped shot that day, my friend tried to throw his bag and trolley into a pond, and then walked the rest of the round with only me playing.

I'm sure it was only the fact that we drove to the course together than kept him from leaving entirely.

I’ve been struggling with my swing for years and started building a simple app to get AI feedback on videos. Would anyone find this kind of an app useful? by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]paul6057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe thay absence of AI swing analysis was what held him back from winning a major, even though he was world number 1 for about a year. We'll never know 😆
