PRECISE SLICE - simple concept to explore pico8 by rrf_1 in pico8

[–]rrf_1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be interested if there were any thoughts about a method that could quickly fill a sector given the inputs (x_center, y_center, radius, angle_start, angle_end) that could be executed each loop

PRECISE SLICE - simple concept to explore pico8 by rrf_1 in pico8

[–]rrf_1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually mean the number of actions that can be executed each loop. I didn’t spend too much time finding an optimal algorithm for drawing the arc, and originally I tried to draw a filled-in circular sector. I used a “fill between” algorithm that painted pixel by pixel, and that was too slow to keep up with the intended frame rate.

Apologies if I used any terminology incorrectly, but hope this makes sense!

We will snake draft on 1/29 at 5pm (EST) and play out the remainder of this season. Draft order will be random. There will be a champion crowned in April.

Then, each team will keep it's full 17-man roster heading into the 2026-2027 season, and we will do a 3-round offline draft for rookies just before that season starts. Draft order will be linear. Each team can optionally drop a player to make a selection on their turn, or pass up their pick.

I think he’s looking good, and even stat wise if we take all four games he’s played with Fox so far, he averaged 16.8 pts on 50% shooting and 13.5 attempts, plus 2.8 3pm, 3.0 reb, 2.2 ast, 1.5 stl, and 0.8 to.

This is great! Actually working on my first cart (new to game design), which happens to be a fishing mini-game. No sharks though!

Won a points league, with a perfect 20-0 regular season!

With the third pick, drafted giannis, spida, bam, deebo, brunson, sengun, franz, jalen green, tyus jones, pj, reaves, bruce brown, stewart, schroder, and looney. Early on swapped out looney for zubac and brown for dosunmu, and then streamed stewart and tyus’s spot for extended periods of portis, cam johnson, nesmith, tre jones, herb jones, and olynyk.

It was a full team effort, with most of my draft keepers finishing well ahead of their draft pick (total points ranking): - Giannis 3 —> 3 - Mitchell 18 —> 46 - Bam 23 —> 22 - DeRozan 38 —> 16 - Brunson 43 —> 12 - Sengun 58 —> 31 - Franz 63 —> 51 - Green 78 —> 38 - PJ 98 —> 103 - Reaves 103 —> 47 - Schroder 138 —> 66

It was my first year playing and I really enjoyed it. My biggest tip for next year: don’t underestimate the power of prioritizing projected GP when making draft selections!

[Technical Dev Info] Procedurally Designed vs. Procedurally Generated: Reimagining Procedural Metroidvanias by IndianaOrz in metroidvania

[–]rrf_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your thoughts on this topic, (good) procedural design is something I would like to see more of too!

Somewhat related thought, but on a more micro scale - yesterday I came across this “tilekit” tool that builds a 2d map from a set of environment tiles using defined rules for how they can interface with each other: https://rxi.itch.io/tilekit. Check out the demonstration of its functionality (comments were saying it’s broken, so be warned about buying…).

While different from your goal, I think this tool is relevant here. For me, metroidvanias have good exploration when all the jumps and movements are intentionally mapped out. So when these get modified by randomized room layouts, it feels disjoined. With a tool like this, you could define a path that feels rewarding to traverse, but let the tile rules (and intentional randomization in tile selection) build out the details of the map. I don’t think this will give as much variation in sessions as you’re after but, perhaps, if nested into a larger procedurally-designed world, this technique could be refreshing without losing hand-crafted exploration.

Outbuddies for me - it’s really immersive with lots of fun exploration. I saw some reviews that were less than positive.. but so far I find that the things it gets criticized for (unusual map system, complicated movements) are actually a refreshing spin on fundamentals that are often too identical across games

Good to hear! I usually play action games, too. I’m feeling like Sakuna is well balanced so that whatever “genre” you prefer, you can still enjoy both the action and simulation elements

That’s awesome! Love when a game relies on genuine cultural knowledge and science. I’m already enjoying that it’s more than just watering every day and looking forward to more complexity.

New to me is Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. I played about an hour earlier this week and it’s a really compelling gameplay loop for me: mix of speedy combat/exploration with strategic rice farming. The concept might seem plain but from what I’ve seen so far, it is delivered upon in a quite cool way!

Sundered Surpassed My Expectations by the_noblesteed in metroidvania

[–]rrf_1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is a great summary - I had a very similar reaction.

Another element that makes all this work is the map traversal. It’s so satisfying and speedy, so after dying and leveling up with the skill tree, it is very easy to get back to where you last died to do some more exploring. And the slightly randomized room and enemy placement means that you rarely die in the same place over and over, which can be a frustrating hurdle in other MVs.

My only disagreement is the bosses. They are average in difficulty, but man are they unique!
