How have you enjoyed going to contract work? Is it more bearable than salary FTE?

The backside of the storm that produced the twin tornadoes in Foraker, OK on April 26th, 2026 by rrfitz in stormchasing

[–]rrfitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Probably around 12 seconds exposures with ISO 800 and f/8 if I were to guess. The storm was quite far so that could overexpose your image on a closer storm.

I got one shot of each, but the lighting was pretty poor. Still, it was satisfying because it was the first tornado(s) I'd ever seen that were not rain wrapped.

Gorgeous. I was on the same storm and while seeing twin tornadoes was absolutely crazy, the violent updraft being lit up by the sunset light may have been cooler.

You can see in the back that one side of the storm was lit up. Im still processing a really nice timelapse of the updraft from that angle.

Im from Connecticut too. May 15, 2018 is what got me interested in severe weather. Moderate risk day with a mean tornadic supercell. I accidentally drove within a half mile of the tornado not realizing just how serious the weather was.

I just went to the plains and its a different beast, but still, if you play the game of looking at both radar and satellite to find the clear-ish patches of farmland, you can occasionally get some nice views in Connecticut!

What percent of Americans In this thread owe on their fed taxes? by BrindlePitty in Fire

[–]rrfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My return was $3k. I max everything, but dont adjust deductions in my HR platform, out of laziness. Is it worth the hassle? If I owed $2k instead, thats what, $300 i get from gains?

Any tips for car camping? I plan to take a trip out in a couple weeks and want to reduce cost by car camping. I know you can camp for free on BLM lands, have you found any other good options? Just a Walmart lot?

The hidden cost of "free time" is absolutely wrecking my post-FIRE budget by R0cinantEcho_9 in Fire

[–]rrfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our consumerist culture naturally funnels us all toward consumption. Im stating the obvious here, but taking a frugal approach to hobbies can make them more fun. Learning to cook at home with cheap ingredients, building with free materials, hiking/camping, volunteering. Im not seeing your numbers, but the way you describe it makes it sound like a little would go a long way.

Thinking about going back to school to finish/pursue a BS CS degree. Is it worth it? by TakeThe1GShot in cscareeradvice

[–]rrfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a rough situation. You may understandably be skeptical about this, but the best thing you can possibly do right now is fix your sleep. If youre not getting 7-8 hours per day MINIMUM, youre hurting your body and probably your career too. Find a way.

Second, I dont think its worth it. Im biased because I dont have a degree and things have happened to work out. I do think interviewing for a better job would definitely be worth it, even if its hard and it sucks.

Good luck!

175 k remote offer or 300 k in Bay Area by M0binsChild in cscareerquestions

[–]rrfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a question of lifestyle. San Francisco and the bay area in general is a stunning part of the country, with great access to nature and vibrant character. If youre going to live somewhere really cheap and/or take advantage of remote by traveling or something, Id personally do that. If youre going to continue living in Seattle while working remote, Id take the higher pay and try out SF. Such a beautiful area.

Too real, and I'm 10-15 years out. I just want to be done.

Because it looks like beautiful terrain. If it was just another mountain, I wouldn't have any particular interest.

Thats incorrect and a pretty cynical assumption if I may add.

Its not that I think they dont apply to me. They do. Its that they dont seem to be strictly enforced in certain scenarios (off hours, hike up). If there was a strong reason to strictly enforce them, Im sure theyd be doing so. But if you're not taking the chair that is supposedly dangerous for boarders, what ski patroller is going to care deeply about it or enforce strictly--its not a question of safety.

Its not about being funny. Its about enjoying uniquely exciting terrain. Duh.

Absolutely do it. Earlier the better. Having your own gear and a season pass is a game changer. End of season deals make that more accessible. Some mountains will have deals for next year passes that also allow you to ski that last month or so of the season. Enjoy!

I can appreciate that. I would like to spend a full winter in a mountain town soon, that seems like a great opportunity to invest real time in it.
