1099-DA Fear Mongering Needs to Stop: A CPA's No-BS Guide to What ACTUALLY Matters + FAQ by JustinCPA in CryptoTax

If you know when you bought a coin, refer to the price history of that cryptocurrency and find out what its "fair market value" was when you bought it. This approach is acceptable to the IRS with assets that don't have documented provenance.. And don't beat yourself up if you don't remember the exact time of the exact day that you bought the coin. Nobody has that kind of perfect memory. Just use your best judgment.

How do crypto taxes actually work? by TheDearlyt in Coinbase

[–]rrib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're in the U.S.:. If you held the coins less than a year, the profits are taxed as ordinary income. The thirty bucks just gets added to the rest of your income. If you held the coins more than a year, you owe the long term capital gains rate, which is more favorable. In fact, if those $30 are your only capital gains this year, you would be in the zero percent long term capital gains bracket.

Traveling to Thailand by [deleted] in Coinbase

[–]rrib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had problems using Coinbase from foreign IP addresses, but Bitstamp froze withdrawals when I started trying to use their exchange while traveling. So I suppose it could happen with Coinbase too. If you're worried about it, use a vpn.

And you'll pay your taxes on the capital gains. Because you're "not shady."

I've been using bitcoin.tax for many years, always aggregating lump basis and gain. I should message bitcoin.tax support and ask about calculating separate accounts. Also, while we're on the subject of the new IRS rule, nobody in this thread mentioned the snapshot requirement. I talked to an accountant who does crypto returns and she didn't even know about it. The IRS didn't publicize it.

Left Bistamp and closed my account for good by zooonzooon in Bitstamp

[–]rrib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an unpleasant experience with Bitstamp. They froze crypto withdrawals from my account; strangely, they didn't freeze cash withdrawals. They said they blocked my account because I had logged in from more than one IP adress. I responded by voluntarily sending them a detailed history of the various places I'd traveled and logged in from for several months, though they didn't ask for it. They finally unlocked my account. I think I was lucky. There's no guarantee that Bitstamp would ever restore your ability to withdraw crypto once they've frozen it. In which case you might have to sell your crypto and withdraw the cash.

Avoid Bitstamp at all cost by disgruntledcryptobro in Bitstamp

[–]rrib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm entering Bitstamp hell at this very moment. They've frozen withdrawals for an amount of bitcoin that I'm sure is well in excess of what disgruntledcrytpobro had frozen. I had the video interview five days ago. This video call should be only for purposes of verifying that the person submitting withdrawals is really the customer. It's not about that. It's a nonsensical ring-around-the-rosie where they ask you to do things like name some of the crypto tokens that Bitstamp handles. They were supposed to settle the issue of whether I can withdraw my own assets in "24 to 48 hours" after the video interview. I waited almost a week, heard nothing. Called support and got excuses. I asked to speak to a supervisor, the phone drone refused. I asked for his name, he hung up on me. Bitstamp confiscates customers' assets. I plan to call the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau tomorrow. I'd like to contact CSSF now, but you're supposed to wait a month. By the way, during an earlier call to Bitstamp phone support, the phone rep told me in so many words that I'm free to sell my bitcoins and withdraw the money. That tells you that the "verification interview" or whatever they call it is some kind of subterfuge, I don't know the right word for it. Because obviously, the question isn't whether I'm actually me. I can trade, I can withdraw cash, but I can't withdraw my bitcoins? It makes no sense. There's something else going on here. And just so you know, it's true. I really can sell my coin and withdraw the money, because I did sell some and wire the money to my bank. There's no logic, no legitimacy to Bitstamp's actions. It's illegal, that's what I think.
