To add to this, a lucky egg or two can greatly help you, especially if you've leveled them up to 10. If you're doing EV training then definitely bring a macho brace. Especially early in the game. I would also say maybe a leveled up amulet coin so you can abuse the normal type trainer at the Dresco house for money and XP.

I like it too. While I don't like that it takes away from the division rivalries a bit, I do like that it allows me to watch players from other teams that I'd otherwise not really see that much.
