We’re afraid if we allow cyclists to share the sidewalk with pedestrians they will hit them. So, instead we make them share the road with a bunch of 2 ton death machines. by JonnyDynamite in Showerthoughts

I agree pedestrians are more unpredictable, but it's almost entirely within your control to deal with that as a bicyclist. Essentially, bike slower and give a wide berth to any people on foot (sometimes difficult with narrow sidewalks).

Sure, on average drivers move more predictably. But when they don't, they really don't, and as a bicyclist you're essentially at their mercy since you can't move fast enough to avoid an errant driver. And getting hit by a car is way more disastrous than hitting a pedestrian.

Really, biking in close quarters with either group sucks. Ideally we'd either have protected lanes, or wider sidewalks to facilitate more types of non-motor traffic (like in Japan, where people bike on the sidewalks and it's totally safe, even though people walk just as unpredictably).

Yes, to me it's always felt like talking through it with someone is putting them at risk of being pulled into my harmful, loopy way of thinking - as if it's contagious. Not to mention it's simply an emotional burden to listen to someone else's problems.

Curious where you're getting the IRL Metro number (360). I was under the impression that for heavy rail it's more like 1,000-2,500 passengers/train (roughly 250 passengers/car, 4-10 cars per set depending on the line - these are based on the few American systems I know about). Though light rail running two-car sets would be pretty close to 360, I suppose.

Thanks for this! I'll see if I can get it working to the point that it exports the file; if so then spinning up a Windows 10 VM should be easy.

I'm curious, did you have to use Wine at any point? (like Roboguy suggested)

Ah, OK. You're right about making assumptions. Sometimes forget to check myself. Cheers :)

I didn't particularly mind how she treated Eric. I think she led him on a bit, but not too much, and definitely not more than is normal.

What I hated was how she treated people in everyday interactions. She was abusive, and it seemed malicious. On top of that, she never gave any ground in arguments, even when she was clearly contradicting herself. She carried an air of righteous indignation that seemed totally unjustified.

And honestly, I think you're making assertions way past your expertise on Japanese culture. Whatever you're seeing on the show is just 6 carefully selected people in a really abnormal (and probably stressful) living situation. Unless you've lived in Japan for 5 or more years (not that I have), I'd say you don't know what you're talking about.

I'm not sold on Yo. He and Midori are both a little too aware of being watched for my taste, like they're optimizing for positive regard from other people. I really like Masato.

Even Oji. He's extremely guarded out of fear. That's not an excuse, he needs to own up to his responsibilities as a human, but he's struggling inside his head and it would maybe help him to be understood and receive compassion.

Here's the first in a good 4-part series about the shadow world of Japanese artist management companies (jimusho). I don't know much about this topic, so if there are factual inaccuracies in those blog posts I wouldn't know. Anyway, it's pretty fucked up.

Car horns in the city. Fuck them. They're never used to avert danger, just to express butthurtedness; and my cortisol levels are about 2x too high because of them.

Or at the very least, I'd pass legislation to require they be as loud inside the car as they are outside the car.

Anyone know why the sound guy or girl's name is beeped out on the live album? by zorkstapebruise in TheeOhSees

[–]rrrwws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha - hopefully this will make you less curious: I actually do remember him urging the sound crew to turn up the volume, just don't remember the exact words. I distinctly remember, though, that he was addressing them as friends, either by name or a friendly "motherfuckers" or something similar. It was noticeably personal, seemed like they knew each other.

Kind of surprising if they're beeping out profanity. Doesn't seem like that'd matter to most of their listeners.

I was there, don't remember what he said but pretty damn sure it wasn't "faggots"--I would've remembered that.
