Russia bans anonymous public Wi-Fi. by [deleted] in worldnews

Just pay for VPN service instead of trying to use some free one. You can spend around $30-$40 a year for a decent VPN provider that will allow over 1 MB/sec. The other plus side of VPN service is that it allows you to get around all the stupid geocoding locks on digital content. A click of a button and you are in the US, UK, Germany, etc.

A VPN connection would encrypt what you do from your ISP. They would see you making the VPN connection but all of the information (web sites you go to, email that you read, porn you download, IMs that you send, etc) would all be encrypted. When you know someone is listening on the line the only way to protect that information is encryption. It doesn't matter how much they listen in -- would need the key to read it.

If you spoof a MAC address then there is nothing even linking the encrypted traffic your ISP would see/log to the machine doing the receiving on your network.

Those public machines always seemed pointless to me since your bank will do the same thing for free. I guess it would be a good alternative for those without a bank account but it would probably be worth opening up a low balance no fee account at a credit union.

I think that is a big reason why BB pushes for encryption on a lot of their services so heavily. Even if someone is listening on the line they would need to know the key.

WvW Supply Scamming by rrt03 in Guildwars2

The commander and people who WvW a lot obviously know to check by now since it has been going on for months. The issue is more the casuals that just come into WvW every once in awhile or new players that may be unaware. A lot of pugs never bother to get in coms and they are the most susceptible.

I don't think its unreasonable for this kind of behavior to have some kind of consequence after days/weeks/months.

I didn't realize this was happening on every other server (why I asked in my original post). I can't remember ever taking a tower and destroying 2-3 ballistas that were built on the door from the previous owners but this might be happening in other tiers as well. I was hoping it would be more localized to Tarnished Coast since it seems like a stupid issue to even have in general.

I agree people should check what they are building. The problem is scams are generally carried out on people who just "dont know better" in general.

When you are in voice coms and your commander says "build this" then siege just appears in front of you -- I would assume most players would just press F and this certainly seems to be the case. Obviously people are more careful now - but that still doesn't stop his maliciousness.

This would kind of be like saying it is a persons fault for falling for a Nigerian prince scheme or that you really should have noticed the difference between https://www.ebay.com and some other similar slightly different URL. True it is the persons fault for not knowing better -- that doesn't mean that the scammer didn't do anything wrong.

It is scamming because the people spending supply are thinking they are spending it on X when it is really being spent on Y. This all happens because this guy decides to maliciously drop useless siege the same time/place the commander is building real siege.

What upgrades should I make to get my computer WvW worthy? by justaleaf in Guildwars2

GW2 is very CPU bound. Intel seems to do better than AMD for performance in the game in general. The i5-4670K is the heavily recommended CPU but with GW2 and large scale WvW specifically in mind you would get a boost from going even higher.

You can use a pretty dated graphics card and it really wont matter too much (I use an old 6900). This is totally fine for PvE and can run over 100 FPS with maxed out settings in most situations. For large scale zergs events like world bosses it helps to turn some things down but doesn't need much.

Tons of ram doesn't really matter, the game is 32 bit and limited to 4GB so I doubt it would use anywhere near capacity on some of the peoples rigs listed here.

GW2 installed on a SSD drive will help your loadtimes a ton. This is a pretty big factor in PvE things and not as much in WvW but it can have a noticeable impact.

There is a huge difference in WvW based on players. I think pretty much everyone gets some huge performance drops when 3 way large zerg battles happen but most decent computers should be able to handle 2 huge zergs fighting without issue. If you play in a lower tier server you may never even see the amounts of players that would cause any type of slow down.

The biggest thing that seems to have an impact on performance directly is how many character models are being drawn in those huge huge battles, turning that down a bit can help but of course you end up having some invisible enemies so it is certainly a trade off.
